Effective Study Strategies to Kickstart the School Year
As students return to classrooms around the world, parents are seeking effective strategies to ensure their children start the school year on the right foot. Kim Silverthorn, a registered master practitioner of clinical counselling and the owner of Tacit Knowledge, offers valuable insights into how students of all ages can enhance their study habits.
One of the key takeaways from Silverthorn’s advice is that traditional cramming for exams is not an effective approach. The brain has limitations in processing information, and learning is most efficient when broken into manageable chunks. Silverthorn recommends the Pomodoro Method, a time management technique developed in the 1980s. This method suggests studying for 25 minutes followed by a 5- to 7-minute break. After four cycles, students should take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes to recharge.
Mixing subjects during study sessions can further strengthen memory retention. Instead of focusing solely on one topic, students should rotate between a few different subjects. This technique helps build stronger connections in the brain, enhancing overall learning.
Active recall is another crucial strategy highlighted by Silverthorn. Rather than simply re-reading notes, students can utilize flashcards, explain concepts aloud, or rewrite information from memory to reinforce their understanding. Engaging with material through old exams or quizzes can also prepare students for the pressure of test conditions.
Establishing a consistent study routine is essential. Silverthorn advises students to dedicate time each day for reviewing material over several days or weeks, rather than cramming just before exams. This gradual approach fosters deeper learning and better retention.
Taking effective notes is also important. Silverthorn recommends the Cornell note-taking method, which involves dividing the page into three sections: keywords or questions in the narrow left column, main notes in the wider right column, and a summary at the bottom. This structured approach encourages active engagement with the material.
Effective time management is crucial for successful studying. Students should schedule study sessions just as they would for other important activities, such as sports or work. Silverthorn emphasizes keeping tasks small to prevent feelings of overwhelm and suggests tackling challenging subjects first. This approach not only boosts motivation but also provides a sense of accomplishment.
Creating a distraction-free study environment is vital. Silverthorn advises against studying on the bed and recommends minimizing distractions from phones or external stimuli. Some students may find that soft background music or white noise aids concentration, but it is best to avoid lyrics during reading or writing tasks.
Quality sleep plays a significant role in effective studying. Silverthorn stresses the importance of getting enough rest, as it is during deep sleep that the brain transfers information into long-term memory. Maintaining energy levels with healthy snacks, such as nuts, yogurt, or fruit, can also support cognitive function.
Incorporating movement during breaks can enhance focus. Silverthorn suggests taking short walks or stretching between study sessions to invigorate both the brain and body. This not only refreshes attention but also promotes effective learning.
Setting specific goals for each study session is another strategy for success. Instead of vague objectives, students should aim for clear tasks, such as completing a set number of math problems. This specificity provides a sense of accomplishment and fosters motivation.
Finally, rewarding oneself after achieving study goals is crucial for maintaining a positive mindset. Celebrating small victories can enhance self-esteem and help students view studying as a rewarding experience rather than a chore.
Silverthorn, who has over 30 years of therapeutic support experience, underscores that struggling with certain subjects is a normal part of the learning process. It does not indicate a lack of ability but rather highlights the brain’s capacity to grow and strengthen connections over time.
