The third annual Winter Market is set to take place at École Gabrielle-Roy, Surrey’s only Francophone public school, on December 13, 2023. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the school’s location in Newton, specifically at 6887 132 Street. This community-oriented gathering aims to celebrate local creativity and entrepreneurship.

The Winter Market has expanded significantly this year, increasing from 40 to 60 exhibitors. According to Émilie Carlen, public affairs advisor with the Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique (School District 93), the market will feature a range of primarily Francophone local artists and artisans. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to showcase their own entrepreneurial projects, further encouraging engagement and creativity within the community.

Visitors to the market can expect to browse a variety of handmade gifts and local products. Attendees will also have access to food trucks offering a selection of culinary delights. A festive highlight will be the chance to take photos with Santa, all while supporting the school’s fundraising initiatives.

Vendors will pay a fee to rent tables, with all proceeds directed towards the school’s fundraising efforts. For more information about the event, individuals can visit the school’s website at gabrielleroy.csf.bc.ca, call 604-599-6688, or email [email protected].

The Conseil scolaire francophone is notable for being one of the largest Francophone employers in Western Canada, employing over 1,200 staff members. École Gabrielle-Roy serves students from kindergarten through Grade 12 and is dedicated to cultivating students’ cultural identity while fostering a vibrant Francophone community. A statement on the school’s website emphasizes the commitment to providing high-quality French-language public education, which also includes opportunities for students to master a second language, English.

The Winter Market not only showcases local talent but also strengthens community ties, making it a cherished event for both the school and the wider Surrey area. As the market approaches, anticipation continues to build among students, vendors, and attendees alike.
