Dr. Rene Van Acker Begins Transformative Leadership at U of G
The University of Guelph (U of G) celebrated a significant milestone on October 18, 2023, as Dr. Rene Van Acker was officially inaugurated as the institution’s 10th president and vice-chancellor. With a deep-rooted history at U of G spanning over 40 years, Van Acker aims to guide the university into a bold new chapter, emphasizing student success, research impact, and community partnerships.
Dr. Van Acker, the first alumnus to assume this leadership role, expressed his commitment to enhancing the university’s stature. “I vow a deep dedication to this role and to our beloved University of Guelph,” he stated during the installation ceremony. The university has a legacy of excellence in agriculture, animal health, and community service, which Van Acker believes positions it uniquely for future growth. He noted, “Now, we need to embrace who we’ve become and let it fuel our growth and our prominence.”
Vision for Student Success and Research Advancement
The newly appointed president, who has nearly 30 years of experience in academia, intends to prioritize hands-on learning opportunities for students. He plans to expand initiatives such as co-op programs, field schools, and innovative research projects that aim to equip graduates with the skills needed for successful careers. Van Acker remarked that U of G graduates remain highly sought after in today’s job market, stating, “We prepare graduates who are thoughtful, adaptable, practical, and ready to lead.”
Moreover, Van Acker’s vision includes a continued commitment to impactful research that addresses real-world challenges. “Teaching, research, discovery, and innovation are the heart of our mission,” he explained. This focus is designed to reinforce U of G’s reputation as a top-tier university, capable of producing graduates and faculty who can make significant contributions to society.
Building Community and Navigating Challenges
In light of the evolving landscape of higher education, Van Acker called upon the university community to leverage its core strengths while fostering a “dual mindset” that balances academic rigor with entrepreneurial achievement. “This is not about shifting away from our academic core; it’s about protecting it,” he emphasized.
Drawing from his upbringing on a farm in southern Ontario, where he learned the value of hard work and resilience, Van Acker shared insights on the importance of adaptation in the face of change. “Our work today, for the University of Guelph and its future, in many ways is no different,” he said, highlighting a shared commitment to overcoming challenges and thriving together.
As Dr. Van Acker embarks on his five-year term, which began in July 2023, the university looks forward to a period of growth and innovation under his leadership. His vision aims to not only honor U of G’s rich history but also to propel it into an influential role on the global stage.
