Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is set to launch in Lee County, Illinois, this fall, providing free books to young children in the area. The initiative, announced by the United Way of Lee County, aims to enhance early childhood literacy by delivering high-quality, age-appropriate books directly to the homes of children from birth to age five.

The Imagination Library, created by Dolly Parton, is designed to foster a love for reading among young children. Each month, participating families will receive a new book at no cost, making it easier for children to access literature in their formative years. While the program operates under the management of the Dollywood Foundation, local partners fund the books for each specific community. In Lee County, the United Way takes on the role of local program partner, overseeing fundraising and coordination efforts.

“We are so excited to bring this incredible program to Lee County,” said Ashley Richter, executive director of United Way of Lee County. “Every child deserves the chance to grow up with books in their home, and the Imagination Library helps make that possible. But it truly takes our community’s support to keep it going. The Dollywood Foundation provides the framework, and United Way provides the funding.”

Community Celebration and Fundraising Event

To mark the launch, the United Way of Lee County invites residents to participate in the Downtown Dolly Stampede on Saturday, November 8, 2023, at 11 a.m. The event will kick off at the Madwater Saloon, with check-in starting at 10:15 a.m. Participants can look forward to a half-mile Dolly-themed walk across the Peoria and Galena Avenue bridges, followed by a scavenger hunt at local businesses featuring special Dolly-themed food and drinks.

Those who complete the scavenger hunt will have the opportunity to turn in their cards by 3 p.m. for a chance to win a Dolly-themed door prize. Participants are encouraged to dress in costumes inspired by Dolly Parton or wear their favorite Dolly gear. Registration for the Downtown Dolly Stampede costs $30, which will cover the expense of providing books for one child in Lee County for an entire year through the Imagination Library.

How to Contribute

Community members looking to support this initiative can directly contribute to the program. A donation of $30 will sponsor one child for a full year of books. Contributions can be made online at unitedwayofleecounty.org or sent via mail to the United Way office at P.O. Box 382, Dixon, IL 61021.

The Imagination Library represents a significant step in promoting literacy and ensuring that every child in Lee County has the opportunity to grow up surrounded by books. The United Way of Lee County’s commitment to this initiative is a testament to the power of community support in fostering educational development.
