Camryn Williams has made history as the first graduate of Lakehead University’s Achievement Program, securing a position as a cardiac nurse at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Her journey began in elementary school when she visited the university’s nursing simulation lab, inspiring her passion for nursing. “It definitely feels like I’ve come full circle,” Williams shared during an interview on CBC Radio’s Superior Morning. “I’ve been wanting to become a nurse since that moment, and now that I’ve fulfilled it, it definitely feels special.”

Supporting Access to Education

Lakehead University established the Achievement Program over a decade ago to assist students facing barriers to post-secondary education. Williams was among the first group of 13 students enrolled in the initiative. Reflecting on her experience, Williams stated, “It was definitely a great experience.”

Amanda Stefanile, the program’s co-ordinator, explained that participants engage in activities both at their schools and within the community, alongside programming at Lakehead University. Successful completion of the program grants students first-year university tuition, significantly easing financial burdens.

Stefanile highlighted the positive feedback the program has received, noting its growth beyond Thunder Bay. It now serves school boards in Nipigon, Geraldton, Sioux Lookout, Dryden, and Kenora. “Each year we’re enrolling new students and sort of growing geographically,” Stefanile remarked. “I think that’s really the goal — to make sure we’re meeting the needs of our community and making Lakehead University accessible.”

Closing the Educational Gap

The Achievement Program aims to address educational disparities faced by youth who encounter financial, social, or academic obstacles. “I’m looking forward to seeing more students coming to Lakehead and fulfilling their dreams,” Stefanile added. “The university stands ready to help support them along the way.”

With a vision to expand its reach, the program continues to evolve, ensuring that more students have the opportunity to pursue higher education and realize their career aspirations. Williams’ success story serves as a testament to the program’s impact and the ongoing commitment to fostering educational accessibility in the region.
