Brandon University Hosts Fall Equinox Events and Conferences

Brandon University is hosting a series of events this week, including discussions on the fall equinox and a national conference focused on rural revitalization. These activities, taking place from September 22 to 29, aim to engage students, staff, and the wider community in meaningful dialogue and cultural celebrations.
Fall Equinox Celebration and National Conference
Today, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Gathering Space of the John E. Robbins Library will be the site of a discussion led by Brandon University Knowledge Keepers. The session will explore the fall equinox as a time for gratitude, reflection, and preparation for the changing seasons. All members of the community are invited to join this free event.
Additionally, Brandon University is the venue for the Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation (CRRF) National Conference, which runs from September 22 to 25. This event brings together researchers, policymakers, and community leaders from across the country to discuss strategies for rural information and transformation. More details can be found at CRRF2025.org.
Indigenous Arts Speaker Series and Science Seminar
This month, the Indigenous Arts Speaker Series will feature two prominent artists. On Thursday at 7 p.m., Cheryl L’Hirondelle, an award-winning singer-songwriter and music producer, will discuss her work at the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art. Her music emphasizes the Cree language and blends Indigenous and contemporary songwriting styles.
On September 29, artist KC Adams will speak at 11:30 a.m. in Room 206 of Clark Hall. Adams, based in Winnipeg, has exhibited her work widely, including pieces from her Cyborg Hybrid series, which is part of the permanent collection at the National Art Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Both events are open to the public.
In addition, Hamid Mumin from the Department of Geology will present at this week’s Science Seminar Series on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The talk will cover the impact of evolutionary changes on global temperature and carbon dioxide levels, providing insights into the intersection of geology and climate science.
Assiniboine College Events and Initiatives
Assiniboine College is also active this week, hosting an Orange Shirt Day event on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at all campus locations. This observance aims to raise awareness about the legacy of residential schools in Canada. More information can be found at assiniboinestudents.ca/events.
The college’s Medical Walk-In Service is available again to students, offering various health services with a nurse practitioner on site. The next clinic will be held on Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Victoria Avenue East campus. Students are reminded to bring their insurance cards.
To celebrate the fall equinox, a Fall Feast will take place today at 5:30 p.m. at the Victoria Avenue East campus, open to all Indigenous students, staff, and their families.
Tickets are now available for the Assiniboine Advancement Dinner, which will honor the achievements of alumni and celebrate the college’s advancements. This event highlights the impact of Assiniboine graduates across Manitoba and beyond.
In sports, the Cougars soccer teams will compete against Providence University College on Saturday at Cougars Field before heading to Winnipeg on Sunday to face the Canadian Mennonite University. Details about game times can be found at assiniboine.net/athletics.
With a variety of events and initiatives, both Brandon University and Assiniboine College are fostering community engagement and cultural awareness this week.
