BC Government Invests $178M in New Student Housing at UVic

The Government of British Columbia is investing $178 million in high-density student housing at the University of Victoria (UVic) to address the pressing issues of affordability and availability for students. This initiative aims to reduce long commutes and increase the time students spend on campus. The province will contribute $121 million to the project, while UVic will provide $57 million in funding.
The new housing development will provide 510 beds designated for upper-year undergraduate and graduate students. Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure, emphasized that this initiative is crucial for meeting the growing demand for more housing on campus and in surrounding communities. “With over 500 new beds on campus, more students can learn closer to home while relieving pressure on the local rental market,” Ma stated.
Plans detail the construction of a 17-storey high-rise tower alongside a seven-storey mid-rise along the Campus Greenway. The project will feature a variety of living arrangements, including studio and four-bedroom apartment-style units, designed compactly to preserve outdoor spaces, seating areas, and bike parking. Additionally, a wing of the building will house 150 studio apartments specifically for graduate students.
The location of the new housing units is strategically chosen, being within 400 meters of the UVic Transit Exchange, ensuring easy access to public transportation. Grace Lore, MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill, called the project a meaningful investment in both education and the local community. “Affordable, accessible housing is key to student success. By expanding on-campus options at UVic, we’re not only supporting learners, but we’re also helping to reduce demand on the broader rental market,” Lore commented.
The Vice-Chancellor of UVic, Robina Thomas, highlighted the importance of on-campus living for students. “Living on campus gives students better access to academic and wellness supports and strengthens their connections to peers, which allows them to help focus on what matters, their education,” said Thomas. This development is expected to significantly alleviate the challenges students face in securing affordable housing.
Since 2018, the Province of British Columbia has committed $2 billion to develop on-campus student housing across post-secondary institutions in the province. To date, nearly 6,900 student housing beds have been completed, with an additional 4,800 beds currently in progress.
The public has the opportunity to provide feedback on the housing project until October 13 through an online survey, with further details available on the UVic website. Construction is anticipated to commence in spring 2026, marking a significant step forward in addressing student housing challenges at the University of Victoria.
