B.C. Teachers’ Union Calls for Increased Funding Ahead of School Year

As the new school year approaches, the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) is urging the provincial government to address funding shortfalls affecting students and schools. The call for increased financial support comes amid rising costs for families, particularly those struggling to afford school supplies.
Organizations like the Salvation Army Gateway of Hope in Langley are stepping in to assist families in need. Dan Donkers, operations manager at the Salvation Army Gateway of Hope, highlighted that many families participating in their back-to-school program spend approximately 50 percent of their monthly income on rent. He emphasized the program’s dual purpose: not only to ease the financial burden on families but also to lessen the stress children face regarding school supplies. “They can just focus on school and not worry about it. Will I have a pencil or a book or the necessary things I need today?” Donkers stated.
This year, the Salvation Army plans to distribute 750 backpacks filled with supplies to students in the Langley School District, marking a significant increase from the 300 to 400 backpacks prepared during the pandemic. Donkers noted that these supplies help students start the school year with confidence.
The need for school supplies extends beyond Langley. The Surrey School District has reported a surge in demand, with over 100 schools requesting a total of 2,225 backpacks filled with new supplies, an increase of 800 from the previous year. The district’s call for assistance underscores the growing challenges faced by schools in providing basic resources.
Carole Gordon, president of the BCTF, described the fundraising efforts by school districts for essential supplies as “unprecedented.” She expressed concern over the implications of districts seeking funds for basic classroom needs, stating, “When we start to see school districts asking for funds and fundraising to do the basics within our system, that’s serious.”
In response to the funding challenges, Education Minister Lisa Beare acknowledged the financial pressures faced by various sectors. In a statement to CTV News, she emphasized the government’s commitment to education, mentioning, “Even in the face of significant uncertainty, our government has protected core funding for education and have actually increased it by over $300 million.” Beare confirmed that the Surrey School District will receive approximately $1 billion in operating funding and grants and pledged to work collaboratively with the district to address ongoing challenges.
As the school year nears, the BCTF remains focused on advocating for better funding. Gordon reiterated the importance of sufficient financial resources for schools, stating, “We continue to advocate for better funding for schools, better funding for classrooms so that students have their needs met.”
The Salvation Army Gateway of Hope is scheduled to deliver the backpacks on August 28, 2023. They will also continue to accept donations of school supplies throughout the year to support families in need. For more information on how to contribute, interested parties can visit their website.
The upcoming negotiations for teacher contracts are set to resume at the end of October, following the expiration of the previous agreement in June. The focus on adequate funding remains a critical issue as educators and organizations work to ensure that all students have the resources they need to succeed.
