SLB OneSubsea Secures Major EPC Contract for Equinor’s Fram Sør

Global energy technology company SLB has announced that its joint venture, OneSubsea, has been awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract by Equinor for a significant development in the Fram Sør field, located offshore Norway. This contract focuses on a 12-well, all-electric Subsea Production System (SPS), marking a pivotal moment in subsea electrification.
The decision to award the contract follows a year-long collaborative phase of Front-End Engineering Design, during which Equinor and OneSubsea refined the project details, leading to the development plan and final investment decision (FID). As part of the EPC scope, OneSubsea will provide four subsea templates and 12 all-electric subsea trees. This innovative approach eliminates the need for hydraulic fluids supplied by the host platform, thereby minimizing necessary modifications to topside facilities.
Transforming Subsea Operations
Mads Hjelmeland, Chief Executive Officer of OneSubsea, stated, “Fram Sør is a breakthrough project for our industry—marking the first large-scale all-electric subsea production system.” He emphasized that these all-electric solutions significantly reduce topside requirements, enabling extensive tiebacks, such as the Fram Sør development. This technology also facilitates access to more marginal resources through a reduced footprint and simplified operations.
The Fram Sør project will connect to the Troll C platform in the North Sea, enhancing energy supply security from the Norwegian Continental Shelf to Europe. The power for the Troll C platform comes from Norwegian shores, which will ensure that production from Fram Sør maintains low emissions.
The contract remains subject to regulatory approval of the plan for development and operations (PDO). If approved, this project is expected to significantly contribute to the region’s energy landscape while aligning with sustainability goals.
About SLB and OneSubsea
SLB operates as a global technology company, focusing on driving energy innovation to create a sustainable planet. With a presence in over 100 countries and a diverse workforce representing nearly double that number of nationalities, the company is dedicated to innovating within the oil and gas sector, enhancing digital operations, decarbonizing industries, and developing new energy systems.
OneSubsea, a joint venture of SLB, Aker Solutions, and Subsea7, is headquartered in Oslo and Houston. The venture employs around 10,000 individuals globally and aims to leverage digital and technological innovations to optimize oil and gas production while reducing the environmental impact of subsea operations.
This contract not only represents a significant milestone for Equinor and OneSubsea but also underscores the ongoing evolution of subsea technology within the energy sector.
