Quebec seniors are set to benefit from increased Old Age Security (OAS) payments this November, with some individuals receiving over $800 as the monthly deposit reflects the latest adjustments linked to inflation. These payments, managed by Service Canada, provide essential financial support to Canadians aged 65 and older, significantly contributing to retirement income for millions.

The upcoming OAS deposit, scheduled for November 26, 2025, will incorporate a recent quarterly adjustment that took effect in October. This adjustment aims to alleviate the impact of rising living costs, marking the second consecutive month that seniors will receive higher payment amounts. The OAS program is a fundamental part of Canada’s federal pension system, offering monthly benefits to eligible seniors regardless of their employment history or prior contributions.

Understanding OAS Eligibility and Payments

To qualify for OAS payments, applicants must meet specific criteria: they need to be aged 65 or older, be a Canadian citizen or a legal resident at the time of application approval, and have lived in Canada for at least 10 years after turning 18. For those currently residing outside Canada, eligibility can still be maintained if they lived in the country for at least 20 years after the age of 18.

Most seniors are automatically enrolled in the OAS program, receiving a confirmation letter from Service Canada around their 64th birthday, detailing when payments will commence. For those who are not automatically enrolled, an application must be submitted to begin receiving benefits. Payments can start as early as the month following a senior’s 65th birthday, but individuals can choose to defer their OAS until they reach 70, which increases the monthly amount for life.

Additionally, low-income seniors may qualify for supplementary support through the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), which requires a separate application. This program is designed to provide additional financial assistance to those in need.

Current Payment Amounts and Tax Implications

The latest adjustments have resulted in the following maximum monthly OAS amounts: $740.05 for individuals aged 65 to 74 and $814.52 for those aged 75 and over. It is important to note that these figures represent maximum amounts, and actual payments depend on the number of years a person has lived in Canada after turning 18. To receive the full amount, one must have resided in Canada for at least 40 years.

OAS payments are considered taxable income in Canada. Seniors are required to report this income during tax season, although taxes are not automatically withheld. Seniors can opt for voluntary tax deductions to manage their tax obligations more effectively.

The financial landscape for seniors in Quebec is evolving, and the OAS program plays a crucial role in ensuring that older adults can maintain a decent standard of living. As the cost of living continues to rise, these payments will help many seniors navigate their financial challenges.

As the province prepares for the upcoming payment, Quebec seniors are encouraged to ensure they are enrolled in direct deposit to avoid any delays in receiving their funds. The final OAS payment of the year will occur on December 22, 2025, marking an important date for many residents.
