Montreal Canadiens Secure Lane Hutson with $70.8 Million Deal

The Montreal Canadiens have finalized an eight-year contract extension with defenseman Lane Hutson, valued at $8.85 million per season. This lucrative agreement, totaling $70.8 million, is set to commence in the 2026-2027 season and will run through 2033-2034.
In a press release dated October 13, 2025, the Canadiens announced the contract that solidifies Hutson’s future with the team. The deal positions him as one of the highest-paid defensemen in the franchise’s history, marking the fourth-largest contract overall, following notable figures such as Carey Price ($10.5 million), Noah Dobson ($9.5 million), and P.K. Subban ($9.0 million).
Hutson’s signing reflects a strategic move by the Canadiens, as General Manager Kent Hughes navigated negotiations to secure a competitive salary for a player who recently won the Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s top rookie. The decision to keep Hutson’s annual salary below the $9 million mark aligns with the team’s long-term financial strategy while allowing the young defenseman to focus on his performance on the ice.
The Canadiens’ management has expressed confidence in Hutson’s potential, indicating that this contract extension not only rewards his past achievements but also positions the team for future success. While some may have anticipated a higher salary, the final agreement is seen as a significant accomplishment for Hughes, who has demonstrated patience throughout the negotiation process.
Hutson’s exceptional skills and contributions to the Canadiens have made him a vital asset, and this contract underscores the team’s commitment to building a strong roster for years to come. As the franchise prepares for the upcoming seasons, fans and analysts alike will be keenly watching Hutson’s development and the impact of his new contract on the team’s overall performance.
