The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has approved funding to enhance safety at two railway crossings in Ogle County. On September 18, 2023, the ICC authorized the replacement of automatic warning devices and the installation of gates at the Stillman Road and Walnut Street crossings along the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad’s track in Stillman Valley.

“This is a vital step in ensuring public safety, especially during Rail Safety Week,” stated ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan. He emphasized the importance of the Grade Crossing Protection Fund, which facilitates the installation of modernized warning devices at highway-rail crossings throughout Illinois.

The estimated cost for the signal design and construction work at both crossings is approximately $736,000. The ICC staff proposed that the Grade Crossing Protection Fund cover 95% of these costs, while the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad will be responsible for the remaining expenses related to the design and construction of the new crossing warning devices. They will also assume full responsibility for the future maintenance of these signals and circuitry.

Project Timeline and Implementation

The ICC has mandated that all necessary signal work be completed within 18 months from the date of the order. This timeline aims to expedite safety improvements for residents and travelers in the area.

The upgrades are expected to significantly enhance safety measures at these crossings, which are critical for both vehicular and rail traffic. By implementing these changes, officials hope to reduce the risk of accidents and improve overall public safety standards in the region.

The approval of these funds reflects a broader commitment by the ICC to prioritize safety at railway crossings across Illinois, particularly in light of the ongoing discussions around rail safety measures. The collaboration between the ICC and the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad underscores the importance of maintaining safe infrastructure as rail traffic continues to operate in proximity to populated areas.

As these upgrades commence, the ICC and local officials will monitor the progress to ensure that the enhancements meet the expected safety standards, aiming for a seamless integration of the new systems into the existing infrastructure.
