The federal government is investing $1.6 million into ten new freshwater projects aimed at protecting and restoring Lake Winnipeg. This was announced by Winnipeg South MP Terry Duguid on March 30, 2024, during an event at the Buffalo Crossing Centre of FortWhyte Alive. The investment underscores the lake’s crucial role in supporting local fisheries, hydroelectric generation, and the cultural heritage of First Nations and Métis communities.

The funding will be allocated to various organizations working on initiatives related to the lake. The Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium, which operates vessels for research and monitoring, will receive $708,900. This funding is intended to enhance their capacity to study the lake’s ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Ducks Unlimited Canada will receive $150,600 to focus on phosphorus entry control and to support educational outreach efforts directed at farmers. This initiative aims to reduce nutrient runoff that contributes to algal blooms, which have plagued the lake in recent years.

Additionally, the University of Winnipeg will be granted $218,000 to improve understanding of phosphorus runoff risks during the snowmelt period. This research is critical as it seeks to address the environmental challenges faced by Lake Winnipeg.

The federal agency emphasized that these projects will create lasting economic and social benefits. They aim to support sustainable fisheries, restore vital habitats, and engage Indigenous peoples, local communities, and landowners in stewardship efforts.

In a media release, Julie Dabrusin, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, stated, “By protecting fresh water, we are safeguarding a resource that communities, industries, and future generations depend on.” She added that these projects facilitate local actions necessary for the protection and restoration of Lake Winnipeg.

With a surface area of over 24,000 square kilometers, Lake Winnipeg is the sixth largest lake in Canada. It accounts for 25 percent of the nation’s commercial freshwater fishery, while the surrounding basin hosts 70 percent of Canada’s farmland. This investment reflects a commitment to addressing the environmental challenges faced by the lake and the communities that rely on its resources.

The federal government’s financial support for these initiatives marks a significant step towards ensuring the long-term health of Lake Winnipeg and its ecosystems.
