Bears Delight in Ice Treats at Whipsnade Zoo During Heatwave

As temperatures soared in July 2023, bears at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, U.K., found innovative ways to keep cool. The zoo’s staff provided the animals with large blocks of ice, allowing them to swim and play in the refreshing water while enjoying ice treats.
The recent heatwave has prompted zoos across the region to adapt their animal care practices. At Whipsnade, the keepers observed the bears engaging with their icy enrichment, showcasing playful behavior that highlighted their natural instincts. This initiative not only supports the animals’ well-being but also offers an engaging experience for visitors.
Enhancing Animal Welfare in Extreme Heat
In response to rising temperatures, zookeepers implemented various cooling strategies. These included providing shaded areas and pools, designed specifically to help the bears regulate their body temperature. “It’s essential for us to ensure that our animals remain comfortable during these hot spells,” said a representative from Whipsnade Zoo. “The ice not only cools them down but also encourages their natural behaviors.”
The bears have been spotted swimming, rolling over, and chewing on the ice, which has become a source of entertainment for both the animals and the visitors. Observers noted that the playful interactions with the ice seem to foster a stimulating environment, crucial for the mental and physical health of the bears.
Visitor Engagement During the Heatwave
The ongoing heatwave has also drawn increased visitor numbers to Whipsnade Zoo, as families seek outdoor activities. The zoo’s management reported a significant uptick in attendance, with many guests eager to witness the bears enjoying their icy treats. “It’s wonderful to see families making memories while learning about animal care and welfare during such hot weather,” the representative added.
Whipsnade Zoo has long been committed to enhancing the visitor experience while prioritizing animal welfare. The innovative use of ice is just one example of how the zoo adapts to environmental changes, ensuring that both animals and visitors can thrive during challenging weather conditions.
With temperatures expected to remain high, the zoo plans to continue these enrichment activities. By providing the bears with ice, Whipsnade Zoo not only addresses their immediate cooling needs but also enriches their daily lives, creating a win-win situation for all involved.
