Youth Discover Curling Skills at Edson’s YIA Day Trip
On January 30, 2026, the Edson Youth Interagency (YIA) organized its first official day-trip program of the year, introducing local youth to the sport of curling. The event welcomed participants aged 11 to 17 for an afternoon of learning and cooking at the Peers Multiplex, running from 12:00 to 16:00. The cost was set at $10 per participant, with an additional $10 for those utilizing Town transportation.
The day commenced with curling lessons, facilitated by volunteers from the Edson and Peers curling clubs. According to Nicole Tarves, Edson Community Development Coordinator, the objective was to provide youth with an opportunity to explore a new sport while fostering skills, confidence, and community connections. “Many of the youth were trying curling for the first time, and they were enthusiastic, engaged, and quick to pick up the basics,” Tarves noted. Special recognition was given to Rose Horn from the Edson Curling Club for her role in leading this initiative.
Following the curling session, participants shifted gears to a culinary activity where they prepared chicken quesadillas, provided by YIA. This segment allowed for social interaction, as attendees enjoyed board games and relaxed time together. The event reached its maximum capacity with 24 participants, of which 23 had never curled before, highlighting the unique opportunity presented.
The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Tarves mentioned that several participants expressed interest in returning to the Peers Multiplex for future programs or curling sessions. “A huge thank you to the Edson Curling Club and Peers Curling Club volunteers for teaching the sport and supporting the youth on the ice. Also, our thanks to the Yellowhead County FCSS Children/Youth, Family & Community Programs for partnering on the program and hosting us at the Peers Multiplex,” said Tarves.
Looking ahead, YIA has an exciting lineup for 2026, which includes Thursday Youth Hub Hangouts at the library and programming for Spring Break and Youth Week in May. “We’re always looking for ways to collaborate and offer meaningful, fun activities for youth across Edson and Yellowhead County,” Tarves added, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to enriching the community’s youth experience.
This event not only introduced curling to young participants but also strengthened community ties, showcasing the power of local initiatives in fostering recreational and social growth.
