The U.S. government has introduced new dietary guidelines emphasizing the importance of consuming “real food.” Released on March 6, 2024, by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the document calls on Americans to move away from highly processed foods, including those with added sugars and artificial additives.

The guidelines, presented by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, stress that Americans should prioritize protein intake at every meal. Specifically, the document encourages the consumption of full-fat dairy products without added sugars. It states, “Consume a variety of protein foods from animal sources, including eggs, poultry, seafood, and red meat, as well as a variety of plant-sourced protein foods, including beans, peas, lentils, legumes, nuts, seeds, and soy.”

Focus on Nutrient-Dense Foods

The guidelines highlight the importance of including essential fatty acids in the diet, recommending oils such as olive oil, while also permitting options like butter and beef tallow. The emphasis on fruits and vegetables is clear, as Americans are advised to incorporate these foods throughout the day, focusing on consuming them in their whole forms.

For infants and children under four years of age, the guidelines recommend “nutrient-dense” options such as full-fat yogurt, cheese, and legumes. Adults are encouraged to include two to four servings of fiber-rich whole grains daily, while minimizing the intake of highly processed carbohydrates like white bread and ready-to-eat flour tortillas.

Kennedy stated, “American households must prioritize whole, nutrient-dense foods—protein, dairy, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and whole grains—and dramatically reduce highly processed foods. This is how we Make America Healthy Again.”

The 10-page document aims to provide a clear, common-sense approach for Americans seeking to improve their dietary habits. By shifting towards more natural food options, the guidelines intend to enhance overall health and well-being across the nation.
