Sycamore and DeKalb Shine with Impressive Conference Victories
Sycamore and DeKalb secured significant wins in their respective football games on March 15, 2024, showcasing impressive performances that highlighted their offensive capabilities. Sycamore defeated Rochelle 27-22 in a nail-biting finish, while DeKalb dominated Stagg with a commanding 41-0 victory.
In a thrilling contest at Sycamore, the Spartans executed a well-practiced two-minute offense to clinch the game. After Rochelle mounted a lengthy 13-minute drive that briefly gave them a 22-21 lead, Sycamore responded swiftly. Quarterback Griffin Larsen connected with Ben Anderson for a decisive 24-yard touchdown pass, sealing the victory for Sycamore. “We work on [the two-minute offense] a lot in practice,” Anderson stated. “It gets the guys open, we move the ball, and it eats up the least amount of clock as possible.”
The Spartans, who now hold a 2-2 record and 1-0 in conference play, demonstrated resilience throughout the match. In the second quarter, they staged a critical drive starting from their own 38-yard line, culminating in a two-yard touchdown run by Dylan Curtis, which extended their lead to 21-7 at halftime. Coach Joe Ryan praised his team’s composure, saying, “They’re not panicking. We just go, hey, two-minute [drill], and they feel comfortable in that.”
Anderson tallied seven receptions for 115 yards and three touchdowns, a commendable performance following only one catch in previous games. Larsen completed 16 of 24 passes for 227 yards, while Rochelle outgained Sycamore 236-116 on the ground but fell short overall with a total yardage of 343-268 in favor of the Spartans.
DeKalb’s Dominance Over Stagg
In a commanding display, the DeKalb Barbs overwhelmed Stagg, finishing the match with a score of 41-0. Led by quarterback Cole Latimer, who threw for five touchdowns, DeKalb improved to 2-2 and began their Southwest Valley Red play with a perfect 1-0 record.
Latimer not only passed for two touchdowns to Davon Grant, but he also ran for three additional scores, showcasing his versatility on the field. He finished with 239 passing yards, while Grant contributed with five receptions for 133 yards. Coach Derek Schneeman commended the team’s balanced offensive strategy, stating, “We were consistent in the run game and that’s always good.”
Defensively, DeKalb was equally impressive, with linebacker Patrick Davis recording eight tackles and two interceptions. The Barbs maintained pressure throughout the game, demonstrating their ability to respond effectively to Stagg’s offensive attempts.
