On a chilly evening on December 7, 2023, the spirit of the holidays filled downtown Kankakee as Santa Claus made a memorable entrance during the 19th annual Lion Wreathing and Tree Lighting ceremony. Despite temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, approximately 100 attendees, including many excited children, gathered to witness the festive occasion. The city’s holiday light display transformed the night, creating a warm atmosphere that momentarily overshadowed the cold.

Kankakee Mayor Chris Curtis efficiently managed the outdoor festivities to keep participants comfortable. The event featured a traditional wreath placement around the heads of the library lions, Seemore and Readmore, by young attendees Elliot McHugh, 3, from Chebanse, and Dionisio Franquiz Perez, 11, from Kankakee. Following this ceremonial act, the crowd made its way to the depot to gather around a towering 30-foot Christmas tree, which awaited the magic of illumination.

The moment everyone had been waiting for arrived as Santa, escorted by a Kankakee Fire Department firetruck, made his grand entrance. Amid cheers and warm hugs, he led the countdown to switch on the holiday lights at the Harold and Jean Miner Festival Square.

Inside the depot, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as children lined up to share their Christmas wishes with Santa. Lucy Parks, 8, was the first to approach him. When asked about her Christmas desires, she admitted, “I said that I didn’t know what I wanted for Christmas.” Santa, however, seemed to have a good idea of what would delight her.

Another young attendee, Oliver Mauritzen, 10, engaged in a quieter conversation with Santa. Despite not revealing his wishlist, he expressed his fondness for the event, stating, “We enjoy this. We make a bunch of memories here.”

The festive decorations surrounding the depot were the result of significant effort by city workers. Zach Newton, superintendent of Kankakee Environmental Services Utilities, shared that preparations began on November 3. Although the start was later than in previous years due to snow removal duties, crews worked diligently to complete the setup, finishing just before the event. The lights are set to remain illuminated until after January 2, offering a continual reminder of the holiday spirit to residents and visitors alike.

As the festivities unfolded, it was evident that the event not only marked the beginning of the holiday season in Kankakee but also strengthened community bonds, creating cherished memories for families and friends.
