Major Storm Threatens Blizzard Conditions Across Nova Scotia
A significant marine storm is poised to impact parts of Nova Scotia this weekend, potentially bringing blizzard-like conditions. Environment Canada has issued marine weather warnings for the southwest coast of Newfoundland and northeastern Nova Scotia, including the Banquereau ocean bank. These warnings highlight expected wind speeds reaching up to 35 knots as the storm approaches the region.
Forecasts suggest that areas such as Pictou County, Guysborough County, Antigonish County, Richmond County, and both segments of Inverness County could experience heavy snowfall. Accumulations of up to 20 centimeters are anticipated from Sunday into Monday, alongside northwesterly wind gusts that may reach between 70 to 90 km/h.
Weather Alerts and Expected Impacts
In addition to the marine warnings, special weather statements are in effect for several counties, including Victoria County and the Sydney Metro area. While Halifax currently does not have any weather statements or warnings, light snow is forecasted to begin as early as Saturday night.
The exact trajectory of the storm remains uncertain, and Environment Canada notes that further warnings could be issued if the system tracks close to the coast. Regardless, snow-covered roads and reduced visibility are likely across the province.
As conditions evolve, the potential for rain, snow, and strong winds will also affect parts of Newfoundland. The storm’s development speed will be crucial in determining its overall impact on the Maritime provinces, with expectations for quieter weather on Saturday as snow squalls diminish.
In summary, residents in several counties should prepare for the upcoming winter weather and stay informed through local advisories. As the storm approaches, conditions may change rapidly, underscoring the importance of heeding official warnings.
