Fire Breaks Out in Vacant Business Block, Disrupts Portage Avenue
A fire erupted early on December 16, 2025, in a vacant business block on Portage Avenue in Winnipeg, prompting the closure of a section of the busy thoroughfare. Emergency crews responded to the scene at approximately 5:40 a.m. and found flames engulfing the one-storey building located at the corner of Portage and Banning Street.
The structure, which features four storefronts, has been unoccupied for some time. Firefighters quickly began their operations, entering the building to assess the situation and checking the roof for potential hot spots around 6:45 a.m. The quick response from the Winnipeg Fire Department helped to contain the blaze, but significant traffic disruptions ensued.
Traffic traveling westbound on Portage Avenue is currently blocked, with drivers being redirected through a parking lot at Burnell Street. As the situation develops, local authorities have not yet provided information regarding the cause of the fire or any potential damages incurred.
Firefighters are diligently working to ensure the safety of the area and to extinguish any remaining embers. The fire’s impact on local businesses and traffic patterns in the vicinity remains to be seen as investigations continue.
The Winnipeg Fire Department is expected to release further updates as they gather more information. Residents and commuters are advised to remain vigilant and seek alternative routes while crews work to resolve the situation.
