On December 25, 2023, charitable organizations in Calgary took to the streets to provide essential support to those in need during the holiday season. Early on Christmas morning, teams from various groups, including the Drop-In Centre and the Salvation Army, worked tirelessly to ensure that vulnerable members of the community received the care and nourishment they required.

Sandra Clarkson, CEO of the Drop-In Centre, emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “It takes a community to build community.” She expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from Calgarians, which made it possible to assist those facing hardship during this festive period.

The festivities began on Christmas Eve, when attendees were treated to a meal from KFC, providing over 1,800 pieces of chicken for at least 900 guests. The following day, a hearty lunch was served featuring turkey with all the traditional sides, along with baked ham, potatoes, and vegetables. Clarkson noted the significance of these meals, saying, “We’re so grateful to be able to provide wholesome, nutritious, comforting food at this time.”

Each guest received a holiday backpack, which included a $10 coffee card, a reusable coffee mug, a chocolate bar, and other treats. Additionally, the St. Luke’s Catholic Women’s League contributed hundreds of holiday cards, complete with postage, enabling guests to send greetings to loved ones. The organization Purses for Hope also donated purses filled with beauty products for female guests, highlighting the collaborative effort to uplift those in need.

Clarkson acknowledged the dedication of their small kitchen team, which comprises just three members, who managed to prepare meals for hundreds. She also credited the behind-the-scenes team for securing sponsorships and donations, saying, “The community is very generous at this time of year.”

Looking ahead, Clarkson stated that the Drop-In Centre plans to explore strategic initiatives related to affordable housing and improvements to shelter services. The organization aims to reach a $2 million fundraising goal to support its programs and services, which assist approximately 1,000 people daily throughout the winter months.

Meanwhile, the Salvation Army set up a mobile warming station near the 39th Avenue CTrain platform to serve those in need. Volunteer Ozzy Canales explained that these stations have been operating throughout Calgary since the beginning of December and will continue until March 31, 2024.

This collaborative effort on Christmas Day underscores the commitment of Calgary’s charitable organizations to provide vital support and warmth to the city’s most vulnerable residents during the holiday season.
