BC Housing has announced a significant delay in the opening of the new shelter in Castlegar, originally scheduled for completion in **December 2025**. The facility, located at **2245 6th Ave.**, is now expected to be operational only in late **2026**. This shelter aims to provide essential support to individuals experiencing homelessness, featuring **20 beds** and year-round services.

The province of British Columbia purchased the former mini-storage site in **June 2024** with plans to transform it into a shelter that would replace the existing **10-bed Out of the Cold Emergency Winter Shelter**. At the announcement of the purchase, BC Housing indicated an investment of **$1.6 million** for renovations.

As the project progressed, the timeline faced multiple adjustments. Initially set for a fall **2025** opening, the date was later moved to **December 2025**. By the following spring, BC Housing reported an “increased scope of work” identified during the interior demolition phase, leading to another rescheduling to **spring 2026**. The latest update indicates that the completion of work at the site will now extend to late **2026**.

Renovation Plans and Community Involvement

The City of Castlegar has facilitated the project by granting the necessary construction permits, including a Temporary Use Permit to allow the shelter’s operation. Castlegar Community Services has been awarded the contract to manage the new facility.

Renovations at the site will include essential living space requirements such as washrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. Additional features will encompass a commercial kitchen, a dining area, a lounge, and partitions to create **20 sleeping pods**. Safety upgrades are also a priority, with plans for improved fire safety measures, enhanced lighting, security cameras, and fencing.

BC Housing’s ongoing commitment to addressing homelessness in the region underscores the importance of this project. Although the delays are disappointing, the proposed facility is expected to provide a crucial resource for those in need once completed. The community awaits the new shelter’s opening, which will significantly enhance services for vulnerable populations in Castlegar.
