Bruce County Museum Hosts Community Quilt Project for Black History Month
The Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre (BCM&CC) is hosting a special community quilting project in celebration of Black History Month and the International Decade for People of African Descent. This initiative features renowned artist and author Nadine Williams, who will lead participants in creating individual quilt tiles that express their personal stories and cultural identities.
Starting on February 28, 2024, from 13:00 to 15:00, visitors aged eight and older are invited to contribute to this collaborative artwork. Each participant will design an 8.5” x 11” tile, with materials provided by the museum. Participants can draw inspiration from their experiences, values, and cultural backgrounds, reflecting “the fabric of your being” in their creations. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and no prior art experience is required.
Community Engagement and Artistic Expression
The completed tiles will be assembled by The Nadine Williams Collective into a single quilt that will be publicly unveiled at the BCM&CC. This quilt will serve as a permanent installation dedicated to diversity, inclusion, and community pride. The project aims to foster a sense of belonging among participants and highlight the rich tapestry of experiences within the community.
Space for the event is limited, and pre-registration is required to ensure participation. The project is made possible through funding from the Community Foundation Grey Bruce, underscoring the importance of community support in promoting cultural initiatives.
This event not only celebrates Black History Month but also encourages individuals to share their narratives, creating a shared artistic legacy that will resonate within the community for years to come. Visitors are encouraged to engage in this unique opportunity to express themselves and connect with others through art.
