Samsung Pioneers Matter Camera Support with SmartThings Update
Samsung has become the first company to introduce support for Matter-compatible cameras through its SmartThings platform. This significant update, announced recently, positions SmartThings as a leader in the evolving landscape of smart home technology.
The latest version, Matter 1.5, expands SmartThings’ capabilities to include a variety of camera types, enhancing the overall smart home experience. This development is part of a broader initiative to unify products and services from different brands and protocols. According to Jaeyeon Jung, Head of the SmartThings Team, “Samsung aims to ensure that products and services built on different brands and protocols deliver a unified experience through SmartThings.”
Enhanced Features and Device Integration
In addition to camera support, Matter 1.5 introduces enhanced functionalities for various smart home operations. These improvements include better control over blinds, awnings, and garage doors, alongside more efficient energy management systems. The update supports a diverse array of camera functionalities, such as indoor and outdoor security cameras, video doorbells, and more.
Notably, Matter 1.5 facilitates features like live video streaming, two-way communication, motion detection, and pan-tilt-zoom controls. These advancements aim to provide users with greater flexibility and security in managing their smart home environments.
Samsung’s collaboration with leading Internet of Things (IoT) device manufacturers, including Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam, has been vital in developing these new Matter cameras. The rollout of these products is scheduled to begin in March 2026, promising an exciting addition to the smart home market.
Building a Safer Smart Home
Integrating Matter cameras with SmartThings is expected to empower users to create a safer and more convenient smart home tailored to their individual lifestyles. Samsung emphasized its commitment to expanding support for industry standards like Matter, reinforcing collaboration with partners to enhance customer experiences.
As of now, SmartThings supports over 4,700 models from more than 390 partner brands, highlighting its expansive ecosystem. This initiative not only underscores Samsung’s leadership in the smart home sector but also reflects the growing importance of interoperability among various smart devices.
With these advancements, Samsung is setting a new standard in the smart home industry. The integration of Matter camera support represents a significant step towards a more cohesive and user-friendly smart home experience, aligning with the company’s vision of simplifying and enhancing everyday life through technology.
