Quebec Class Action Takes Aim at Fiat 500 Door Handle Defects

A class action lawsuit has been launched in Quebec against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (now known as Stellantis) concerning defective door handles on the Fiat 500. The legal action stems from reports that the door handles can detach, making the vehicle inoperable and posing significant safety risks for drivers and passengers alike.

The lawsuit, initiated by the Lex Group in January 2018, has gained momentum with the Quebec Superior Court’s approval in April 2024. It targets all Fiat 500 models sold between 2012 and 2019, which includes both the standard and performance versions, such as the Abarth and the convertible Fiat 500C. According to attorney David Assor, this defect affects approximately 12,000 vehicles in Quebec alone. However, as some of these vehicles are up to 14 years old, the potential number of impacted consumers could rise to as many as 33,000.

The court documents highlight the inherent dangers associated with the defect, stating that passengers may struggle to exit the vehicle in emergencies. This concern echoes similar issues faced by Tesla owners, who have reported difficulties opening their doors following accidents.

While there has been no official safety recall from Transport Canada, the circumstances have led to significant inconvenience for Fiat 500 owners. Many have described the experience as “embarrassing and annoying,” with some having to enter and exit their vehicles through the trunk, particularly during cold winter months.

In a settlement proposal awaiting approval from the Quebec Superior Court on February 16, 2026, Stellantis has agreed to cover the costs for repairing or replacing defective door handles, free of charge, for a period of ten years from each vehicle’s in-service date. For vehicles older than ten years, an additional year of coverage will be available following the settlement approval date. Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of claims that can be submitted during this warranty period.

The company has also pledged to reimburse owners for any repair costs incurred prior to the settlement, provided they can substantiate their expenses. The expected cost of replacing a door handle can range from approximately $200 to $400 for parts and labor. Assor has noted that many consumers have had to replace their door handles multiple times, as replacement parts often prove to be just as defective as the originals.

The financial implications of this settlement could be significant, with estimates suggesting that Stellantis might face costs between $5 million and $12 million in reimbursements, should the court approve the agreement.

Individuals who were affected by this issue will automatically be included in the class action if the settlement is approved. Those wishing to opt out must do so by February 4, 2026. While there have been no similar class action lawsuits against Fiat 500 door handles in other provinces, Assor indicated that consumers across Canada who purchased a used Fiat 500 originally sold in Quebec would also be eligible for compensation. Stellantis has stated that the extended warranty will apply nationally, a move described as voluntary and not mandated by the settlement.

As the situation develops, Fiat 500 owners in Quebec and beyond are keenly awaiting the court’s decision on the proposed settlement and the ramifications it may have for their vehicles’ safety and functionality.
