Minooka Launches Surf Internet Service to Enhance Connectivity
The Village of Minooka has officially welcomed Surf Internet, a provider of high-speed fiber optic services, to enhance internet connectivity for local residents and businesses. A ceremonial groundbreaking took place on December 4, 2023, at the Minooka Village Hall’s Community Room, where officials celebrated this significant development despite the extreme cold weather.
Surf Internet specializes in constructing fiber optic networks and aims to deliver internet access speeds of up to 8 gigabits per second. The company primarily focuses on rural and underserved areas across Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. According to Regional Development Manager, Tom Lekan, “Surf Internet is one of the most highly rated internet fiber optic providers,” which highlights its commitment to quality service.
Founded in 1999 by owner Gene Crusie, Surf Internet has grown to employ over 300 people and currently serves more than 600 communities. The company already provides services in Coal City, located in Grundy County, and is now expanding to Minooka.
Expanding Fiber Optic Infrastructure
As part of the rollout in Minooka, Surf Internet will begin boring fiber optics in the village’s rights-of-way. This method is recognized as the most effective way to deliver high-speed internet. “Once Surf is done, you will be able to order fiber for your house at a reasonably low price,” Lekan stated. He emphasized that this initiative will transform Minooka into a “GIG city,” a designation that few towns achieve.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Minooka officials, including Mayor Ric Offerman, Trustee Barry Thompson, Village Administrator Dan Duffy, Business Development Director Jack Guldenbecker, and Public Works Director Ryan Anderson, joined Surf representatives such as Regional Market Manager Audrey Miller. Duffy expressed optimism about the new partnership, stating, “They are expanding their network to our area, hopefully bringing competition and choice for fiber to the Village of Minooka for our residents, commercial industry, and industrial as well.”
The collaboration is expected to foster a competitive environment, providing more options for high-speed internet access, which is increasingly essential in today’s digital age.
