LEGO Celebrates Furby’s 30th Anniversary with Unique Build
A new LEGO build celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Furby has gained attention for its creativity and nostalgic elements. Designed by Rancor1138, this impressive model features 1,700 pieces and incorporates moving parts, including working eyelids and a unique design element that references the cultural impact of the original toy.
The Furby, which first launched in 1998, sold over 40 million units within its first three years. The toy sparked widespread concern among parents who feared it contained hidden microphones, prompting the National Security Agency (NSA) to issue statements denying any surveillance capabilities. As children experienced unexpected conversations from their Furbys in the wee hours, a sense of technological anxiety emerged, turning the playful toy into a source of paranoia.
Design Features and Cultural Significance
Rancor1138’s LEGO Furby stands nearly 19 inches tall and is styled in classic black and white. The build cleverly includes both a brick-built heart, symbolizing the companionable nature of Furbys, and a miniature figure of a man in black, representing the fears surrounding surveillance. This choice reflects the duality of the toy’s perception—designed to be a friend yet also feared as a possible spy.
The model employs unique building techniques, using helmet pieces from the Buzz Lightyear sets for the eyelids, which effectively captures the necessary curvature. The articulation of the ears is achieved through Technic ball joints, allowing for natural movements. The mouth operates without complex gearing, making the design accessible for production. At 46.6 centimeters tall with ears extended, it is a striking piece that commands attention, echoing the original’s impact in toy aisles.
While Tiger Electronics holds the Furby trademark, the color scheme of this LEGO version is generic enough to potentially pass legal scrutiny. The design has evoked a wave of nostalgia, with collectors who remember the original toy now seeking substantial display pieces rather than impulse buys.
Future Prospects and Community Support
Rancor1138 was inspired to create this build as a gift for their child, who developed an interest in electronic toys from the Y2K era. After multiple iterations, the current design was finalized, showing great promise for inclusion in LEGO’s product lineup. The 30th anniversary of the Furby arrives in 2028, providing a timely marketing opportunity if the build advances through the review process.
Currently, the LEGO Ideas platform requires submissions to gather 10,000 votes to enter the review phase. As of now, this Furby build has accumulated 2,622 votes with 563 days remaining to reach the next milestone. This voting system has previously allowed community-driven designs to become official sets, demonstrating the potential for innovative projects to gain traction.
To support this initiative and witness the LEGO Furby transform from concept to reality, enthusiasts are encouraged to vote on the LEGO Ideas website. The combination of nostalgia and clever design elements, particularly the man in black Easter egg, creates a compelling case for this build’s production, ensuring it stands as more than just a digital render.
