Algonquin Launches Tele-Health Service with Optional Monthly Fee
Residents of Algonquin, Illinois, can now access tele-health services through a new program designed to improve healthcare accessibility. The village’s initiative allows residents to opt into the service for a monthly fee of $6, which will be added to their utility bills. The Algonquin Village Board approved a contract with Tap Telehealth, a division of MD Health Pathways, after a public hearing held in August.
The tele-health program is currently available for free until the end of October, giving residents an opportunity to evaluate the service without commitment. Those who choose not to participate will need to opt out by the end of November or within 30 days of receiving the first bill. Opt-out forms can be found on the village’s website at algonquin.org/telehealth. Residents can opt out at any time, allowing flexibility for households to decide based on their needs.
The $6 monthly fee covers tele-health services for up to ten household members and will appear on utility bills as “telehealth services.” The initiative aims to address barriers in accessing timely healthcare, particularly for residents who face challenges related to transportation and provider availability.
Using the service, called “Text a Physician,” residents can connect with licensed medical professionals via text, phone, or video call. The program provides unlimited consultations without copays or insurance requirements, making it accessible to all utility account holders regardless of age or insurance status. As noted on the Tap Telehealth website, the service is not intended for emergency care but is suitable for common health issues such as colds, flu, minor injuries, and mental health support.
Village President Debby Sosine expressed optimism about the program, stating, “This program represents an important step toward addressing barriers to healthcare in our community.” The village’s proactive approach is a response to health assessments conducted in McHenry and Kane counties, which highlighted the need for improved healthcare access.
Residents can initiate the service by texting 214-305-8513 to consult with a physician. The program is not funded by taxpayers, as the fee is described as a “100% pass-through,” meaning all revenue goes directly to the tele-health provider.
The initial contract with Tap Telehealth is for three years, after which the monthly fee is scheduled to increase to $9. If the service continues beyond five years, any potential rate adjustments will be based on the Consumer Price Index, capped at 5%.
Tap Telehealth is expanding its presence in Illinois, having approached several municipalities, including Marengo, Pingree Grove, and Fox River Grove. Algonquin is the first to implement the service. The company has also established partnerships in Texas and South Carolina, aiming to broaden its impact.
According to Brian Davis from MD Health Pathways, the tele-health service effectively brings healthcare closer to residents, likening it to having a doctor readily available. For those with prescriptions, the average cost for uninsured patients is $12, with the company collaborating with Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs to provide discounted medication.
For further information about the Tap Telehealth program in Algonquin, including enrollment details and frequently asked questions, residents can visit algonquin.org/telehealth or text the provided number during the trial period. The initiative stands as a significant step toward enhancing healthcare access for the community.
