Scientists Fight Back Against Antiscience Movement in New Book
As climate change accelerates and misinformation proliferates, two prominent scientists have taken a stand against the growing antiscience movement. In their new book, Science Under Siege, climate scientist Michael Mann and vaccine developer Peter Hotez expose the coordinated efforts undermining scientific integrity and public trust.
Mann, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, is best known for developing the “hockey stick” graph that illustrates the sharp rise in global temperatures since the 1900s. Hotez, a microbiologist and pediatrician at Baylor College of Medicine, led a team to create a low-cost, patent-free COVID-19 vaccine, which has benefited nearly one hundred million people in India and Indonesia.
Both scientists have faced significant backlash as they advocate for their fields. They describe their experiences in the book, detailing the harassment and threats they have received, including from political figures and segments of the public. The authors aim to galvanize support for science and inspire collective action, stressing the urgency of confronting misinformation.
The Convergence of Climate and Health Risks
Mann and Hotez highlight a troubling intersection between climate change and infectious diseases. As climate change alters habitats and migration patterns of disease-carrying species, the risk of zoonotic diseases—those transmitted from animals to humans—grows. Increased human proximity to wildlife can lead to outbreaks of diseases previously contained in animal populations.
Yet, the authors argue that a more insidious threat exists: a systematic attack on science. They point to the current political landscape, asserting that there is “a coordinated, concerted attack on science by today’s Republican Party.” They identify five principal forces behind this antiscience movement:
1. Plutocrats and their political action committees
2. Petrostate politicians and polluters
3. Disgraced professionals, including some physicians and professors
4. Propagandists, particularly those using platforms like podcasts
5. The press, which often amplifies these misleading narratives
These groups, according to Mann and Hotez, collaborate to generate false narratives that confuse the public and undermine scientific consensus.
The Historical Context of Antiscience Propaganda
The authors trace the roots of antiscience rhetoric, noting that it has been a tool for authoritarian regimes for over a century. They cite historical examples, such as Joseph Stalin‘s persecution of scientists in the Soviet Union, which resulted in devastating agricultural policies.
Discrediting science serves as a precursor to undermining other forms of knowledge and truth, thereby destabilizing societies. Mann and Hotez detail how the messaging around COVID-19 mirrored the climate change discourse but evolved at an accelerated pace. Initially, leaders downplayed the threat of the pandemic. As the reality became undeniable, the narrative shifted to discourage collective action, emphasizing economic concerns over public health.
This manipulation fosters divisions within society, impeding the necessary cooperation to tackle complex issues. Mann and Hotez argue that the misinformation surrounding both climate change and COVID-19 has hindered effective responses, with public skepticism about science growing in the face of fearmongering.
The authors conclude with a clarion call for political action, urging the public to vote and support leaders who prioritize scientific integrity over profit and power. They stress that meaningful change can only occur through democratic engagement, particularly in an era where systemic issues often go unaddressed.
While Mann and Hotez primarily address those already sympathetic to their views, their book is an urgent reminder of the stakes involved in the ongoing war on science. As misinformation continues to flourish, the authors emphasize that the future of humanity and the health of the planet depend on confronting these dark forces directly.
