Majority of EV Drivers Commit to Electric with Unwavering Loyalty
More than 80% of electric vehicle (EV) drivers in the UK have expressed a strong commitment to electric mobility, stating they would “never go back” to petrol or diesel vehicles. A recent report by the firm Evans Halshaw reveals that 83.9% of EV owners opted for another electric model when trading in their cars. This data, collected from thousands of part-exchanges between January 1, 2025, and June 30, 2025, highlights a growing trend of loyalty among EV owners.
The shift towards electric vehicles is gaining momentum, particularly in light of the UK government’s plans to prohibit the sale of new petrol and diesel cars after 2030. These measures are part of a broader strategy to encourage drivers to adopt cleaner vehicles. The data indicates a significant uptake in EVs, showcasing the changing landscape of the automotive market.
Shifting Trends in Vehicle Ownership
The analysis of vehicle part-exchanges reveals insightful trends regarding consumer preferences. In addition to the high rate of returning EV drivers, the report found that nearly 23.5% of petrol plug-in hybrid drivers transitioned to fully electric vehicles when changing cars. This suggests that plug-in hybrids are serving as a crucial entry point for consumers considering electric options.
The increasing adoption of EVs can be attributed to a variety of factors. Financial incentives play a substantial role, with the UK government offering grants of up to £3,750 for eligible new EV models through the Electric Car Grant scheme. This initiative has made the transition to electric driving more accessible for many consumers.
Moreover, the government’s EV chargepoint grants support those living in rented accommodations or flats, covering up to 75% of the costs related to purchasing and installing home charge points, capped at £350. Such measures enhance the affordability and practicality of owning an electric vehicle.
Infrastructure Improvements Fueling EV Growth
Another significant factor contributing to the rise of EVs is the substantial improvement in charging infrastructure. The number of public charge points in the UK surged from 28,460 in 2021 to 85,163 in 2025, marking an increase of nearly 200%. This expansion makes it increasingly convenient for EV owners to charge their vehicles while traveling.
Beyond preferences for fuel types, the research also sheds light on brand loyalty among UK drivers. Approximately 43.5% of drivers across all fuel types tend to stick with the same manufacturer when trading in vehicles. This statistic underscores the importance of brand recognition and trust in the automotive market.
As electric vehicle technology continues to evolve and infrastructure expands, the commitment of consumers to electric mobility appears firmly established. With government backing and growing public confidence, the automotive industry is poised for a significant transformation in the coming years.
