Innovating Security: Ashwin Maniyankode’s Vision for Accessibility
Ashwin Maniyankode Chandranathan, a Senior Product Manager at Vicon Industries, is pioneering innovative security systems that emphasize accessibility and usability. In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, where artificial intelligence and automation are transforming industries, Ashwin asserts that the true measure of innovation lies in its ability to be effectively utilized by people.
From Humble Beginnings to Tech Leadership
Born in Wayanad, a picturesque region in southern India known for its coffee and pepper plantations, Ashwin’s early life was shaped by the values instilled by his farming parents. These principles of discipline and long-term vision have been instrumental throughout his career in technology. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from VTU in Bangalore, Ashwin began his professional journey at Tech Mahindra as a QA engineer. His work on the BT 21CN project for British Telecom (BT) involved automating router configuration tests, significantly reducing regression testing time by 50%.
At BT e-Serv in India, he developed testing frameworks for the iVserve platform, enhancing efficiency by 35% and minimizing live issues by 30% per release. These foundational experiences solidified his belief that efficiency stems from smarter systems rather than increased effort.
Integrating Technology with Human-Centric Design
Ashwin’s pursuit of knowledge led him to earn a Master’s degree in Telecommunication Systems Management at Northeastern University in Boston. This academic background enabled him to merge telecommunications, cloud platforms, and AI-driven product management, shaping the core of his current role at Vicon Industries.
At Vicon, a leader in security and surveillance technologies, Ashwin has been pivotal in transitioning the company from traditional hardware-based systems to intelligent, cloud-connected ecosystems. A key achievement is the launch of Anavio, Vicon’s cloud-based access control and video management platform. Designed for scalability and ease of use, Anavio integrates seamlessly with existing infrastructure, offering real-time analytics and encrypted remote monitoring. As reported by MarketsandMarkets, the global cloud video surveillance market is projected to expand from USD 3.2 billion in 2024 to over USD 10.5 billion by 2030, driven by AI-based automation and the rise of “security as a service.”
Ashwin emphasizes the importance of designing for all users, stating, “We’re not just designing for large enterprises. We’re designing for school districts, hospitals, and small businesses. These are places where ease of use and reliability are life-critical. Innovation only has meaning when it’s inclusive.”
Another significant project under Ashwin’s guidance is the NEXT Modular Sensor System, which combines AI-powered video analytics with a modular design, allowing for adaptive surveillance. Within just three months of launching with Anavio, NEXT generated over $600,000 in revenue and received multiple international accolades, including the ESX Innovation Award and the iF Design Award.
Ashwin believes that NEXT’s architecture enables facilities to implement AI-based detection tools without requiring extensive technical expertise, making advanced security solutions accessible to a broader audience.
Enhancing Public Safety Through Innovation
A notable initiative is the integration of the Omnilert solution into the Vicon Valerus video management system. This technology uses computer vision and deep learning to detect firearms in live video feeds, alerting authorities within seconds, which is crucial for early threat detection. The urgency of such technology is underscored by data from the Gun Violence Archive, which reported over 38,000 firearm-related deaths in the U.S. in 2024. Ashwin notes, “AI can’t replace human decision-making, but it can enhance it by buying crucial seconds in emergencies. The goal is to make AI a partner in prevention, not just analysis.”
For Ashwin, accessibility in technology is not merely a responsibility; it is a fundamental principle. He contends that the future of technology leadership lies in simplifying complex systems to enhance usability. Many enterprise software implementations falter not due to technical flaws, but because of user adoption barriers. His collaborative approach at Vicon ensures that engineering, marketing, and customer experience teams work together to create solutions with a clear, human-centered purpose.
A Global Perspective on Security Solutions
Beyond product development, Ashwin has represented Vicon in training and client engagements across the U.S., London, and Dubai, facilitating the deployment of cloud and AI-based security systems in diverse settings. His extensive global experience allows him to translate intricate innovations into adaptable solutions that account for various regulatory and cultural contexts.
Looking ahead, Ashwin aims to further his leadership in AI-driven security platforms and telecom-integrated cloud systems, fostering innovation that is scalable, ethical, and inclusive. He believes, “Innovation isn’t about building the most advanced technology. It’s about building the technology that most people can actually use.”
As digital transformation accelerates across sectors, the emphasis on accessibility and human-centered design is poised to shape the future of security, healthcare, and public infrastructure, ensuring that technological advancements empower rather than overwhelm users.
