Central Okanagan Sees Population Growth Slow to 1.2% in 2025
Population growth in the Central Okanagan has slowed significantly, reaching its lowest rate this decade in 2025. According to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, as of July 1, 2025, the population of the greater Kelowna area—encompassing West Kelowna, Peachland, and Lake Country—rose by just 1.2 percent, bringing the total to 254,605. This represents an increase of 2,957 people compared to 251,648 in 2024.
The latest growth figures are stark in comparison to previous years, where the region saw an influx of approximately 8,000 new residents in 2022, over 6,100 in 2023, and 5,600 in 2024. The 2025 data indicates that only 646 individuals moved to Kelowna from other provinces, while 1,108 new residents came from international migration. This international number has also dipped significantly from earlier years.
Comparative Growth Rates Across Canada
The slowing growth has led to a shift in Kelowna’s status, as the city is no longer ranked among Canada’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas. In a broader context, Kelowna is one of the few regions in Canada experiencing a downturn in migration. Notably, Toronto and Kamloops also reported population declines, with Kamloops seeing a decrease of 259 people, equating to a 0.2 percent drop.
In contrast, Edmonton emerged as the city with the most significant population increase in Canada for 2025, with a growth rate of 3 percent. Following closely were Calgary and Moncton, both experiencing growth rates of 2.9 percent. Meanwhile, Montreal and Vancouver had minimal growth, registering increases of 0.5 percent and 0.2 percent respectively.
Statistics Canada released these updated population figures on January 14, 2025, highlighting the changing demographic landscape across the country. The data reflects broader trends affecting the Central Okanagan and serves as a critical indicator for future economic planning and resource allocation in the region.
