Algoma University Graduate John Willinsky Receives Order of Canada
An esteemed graduate of Algoma University, John Willinsky, has been appointed to the Order of Canada for his significant contributions to public access to scholarly research. This recognition, announced in December, highlights Willinsky’s efforts through the Public Knowledge Project, which is regarded as the most widely adopted scholarly publishing initiative globally.
Commitment to Education and Knowledge Sharing
Willinsky earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Algoma University in 1974 and has maintained strong connections to the Sault Ste. Marie community, where he began his teaching career. His experiences in education have profoundly influenced his dedication to making academic knowledge accessible to a broader audience.
Reflecting on his formative years, Willinsky noted, “One of the great inspirations for the Public Knowledge Project was when, as a school teacher in the 1970s, I could come by Algoma University’s Arthur A. Wishart Library on Sunday afternoons with my wife at the time, Pam, and sit by the windows, absorbed and fascinated by what we could find in the library’s latest journals and magazines.” This sentiment underscores his enduring passion for education and knowledge dissemination.
Recognition of Excellence
The appointment to the Order of Canada, as recognized by the Office of the Governor General of Canada, acknowledges Willinsky’s lifelong commitment to democratizing access to information. His work has significantly impacted the academic landscape, advocating for transparency and accessibility in scholarly publishing.
Sheila Embleton, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor of Algoma University, expressed her pride in Willinsky’s achievements. “Algoma University takes great pride in celebrating the achievements of its alumni, whose work continues to make a lasting impact locally, nationally, and internationally,” she stated. Embleton highlighted that Willinsky’s recognition exemplifies the academic community’s commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity and contributing to the public good.
Willinsky is among 80 individuals appointed to the Order of Canada in December 2025, underscoring the importance of his contributions to society. As a distinguished member of Algoma University’s alumni, he serves as an inspiration for current and future students, demonstrating the profound impact of educational dedication and innovation on global scholarship.
