AI Videos Revive Deceased Celebrities, Sparking Controversy
The emergence of hyper-realistic AI videos featuring deceased celebrities has stirred both amusement and concern across social media platforms. Powered by OpenAI’s Sora app, which launched in September 2023, these videos depict historical figures and entertainers in surreal scenarios, often pushing the boundaries of respect and authenticity.
One such video portrays Queen Elizabeth II arriving at a wrestling match on a scooter, where she proceeds to climb a fence and leap onto a wrestler. Other clips showcase her humorously praising “delightfully orange” cheese puffs in a supermarket and even playing football. Such portrayals have garnered millions of views, captivating audiences and sparking debates about the ethical implications of using the likenesses of those who have passed away.
While many find humor in these videos, not all reactions have been positive. Concerns over the misuse of Sora’s technology have grown, particularly following an incident where users created disrespectful videos of Martin Luther King Jr. during his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. In response to complaints from King’s estate, OpenAI took measures to prevent the creation of further videos depicting the civil rights leader.
Ethical Concerns and Family Reactions
The fallout from these AI-generated clips has prompted the children of several deceased celebrities to voice their distress. Zelda Williams, daughter of actor Robin Williams, expressed her frustration on Instagram, urging followers to stop sending her AI videos of her father, calling the content “maddening.” Similarly, the families of comedian George Carlin and activist Malcolm X have condemned the use of Sora to fabricate videos that exploit their loved ones’ images.
Constance de Saint Laurent, a professor at Maynooth University in Ireland, highlighted the psychological impact of encountering such content. She stated, “If suddenly you started receiving videos of a deceased family member, this is traumatizing. These (videos) have real consequences.” The phenomenon has raised questions about the control families should have over the likenesses of their deceased relatives.
An OpenAI spokesperson acknowledged the importance of free expression in depicting historical figures but emphasized that public figures and their estates should maintain control over their likenesses. They noted that for “recently deceased” individuals, authorized representatives can request restrictions on the use of their images in Sora.
Future Implications of AI Technology
Critics argue that the rapid proliferation of AI tools like Sora poses significant challenges for controlling the representation of public figures. Hany Farid, co-founder of GetReal Security and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, expressed concern that while OpenAI has implemented some safeguards, the issue of unauthorized likenesses will only worsen as technology advances.
The recent online circulation of AI-generated clips featuring the likeness of filmmaker Rob Reiner following a high-profile incident illustrates this growing problem. As synthetic content becomes more accessible, the risk extends beyond celebrities to include everyday individuals whose images and identities can be manipulated without consent.
Researchers warn that this unchecked spread of AI-generated content, often referred to as “AI slop,” could undermine public trust in authentic news sources. “The issue with misinformation is not that people believe it; many do not. The problem arises when they lose trust in real news,” said de Saint Laurent. As the landscape of digital media evolves, the implications of AI-generated videos will continue to be a critical topic of discussion among ethicists, families, and technology developers.
