On December 4, 2023, a remarkable act of community solidarity took place as 14 Catholic elementary schools in Windsor-Essex came together for the 11th annual Santa School Bus Rides initiative. This event saw students collecting and delivering thousands of donated toys, clothing items, and food to local families in need, significantly supporting local charities.

The initiative unfolded at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School, where students from the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB) packed donations onto school buses destined for the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul food banks. “You can hear the joy here with Holy Cross Choir. Thousands of food items, as well as thousands of gifts and games,” remarked Emelda Byrne, director of education with the WECDSB. She emphasized that each student contributed a gift or toy, eager to assist families in need during the holiday season.

This year marked a record-breaking participation, with schools such as Assumption College Catholic Middle School, Cardinal Carter Catholic Middle School, and St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School among the contributors. The full list of participating schools included H.J. Lassaline, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Sacred Heart, St. Andre French Immersion, St. Anne FI, St. Christopher, St. Mary, St. Peter, and W.J. Langlois Catholic Elementary Schools.

A Grade 5 student from Holy Cross, Otavio, shared his thoughts on the initiative: “We’re doing this so kids can share gifts with others who may not receive a toy this Christmas. It makes me feel good to give.” His sentiment reflects the broader mission of the initiative, which aims not only to provide tangible items but also to instill a sense of community and compassion among the students.

The success of the Santa School Bus Rides initiative is attributed to a collaborative effort involving the WECDSB, Windsor-Essex Student Transportation Services (WESTS), the Windsor and LaSalle Police Service, and dedicated community volunteers. Principal Dana Capaldi of Holy Cross stated, “We really like to inspire our students to look for ways they can support the community as they grow.” She noted the positive impact of the event, which fosters joy and understanding among students about the importance of supporting those who may face hardships during the festive season.

Byrne remarked that the initiative represents more than merely charitable giving; it embodies the values of belonging and support within the Catholic community during the holiday period. The collected donations will ensure that vulnerable families throughout Windsor-Essex receive much-needed gifts, bringing joy and relief to those experiencing challenging circumstances.

As this year’s event concluded, the collective effort of the schools and the community shone brightly, reinforcing the spirit of giving that defines the holiday season. The Santa School Bus Rides initiative continues to serve as a poignant reminder of the powerful impact of generosity and compassion in enhancing the lives of those in need.
