Wheaton League of Women Voters Marks 70 Years of Civic Engagement
The League of Women Voters of Wheaton celebrated its 70th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to civic engagement. During the celebration, Mayor Phil Suess officially proclaimed September 22, 2025, as the “70th Anniversary of the League of Women Voters of Wheaton Day.” This recognition underscores the league’s vital role in enhancing the civic life of the Wheaton community.
Founded in 1955 by Marget Hamilton, who later became mayor of Wheaton, the local chapter has a rich history of empowering residents through education and advocacy. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to informing voters and encouraging participation in democracy.
Throughout its 70 years, the Wheaton chapter has organized numerous initiatives, including candidate forums, voter registration drives, and community education programs. These efforts aim to equip residents with the necessary knowledge and tools to make informed decisions at the ballot box and engage meaningfully in civic matters.
In his proclamation, Mayor Suess commended the league for its enduring contributions to the community, emphasizing the importance of informed voting and active participation in governance. The mayor’s recognition reflects a broader appreciation for the league’s efforts to promote civic responsibility and voter engagement among citizens.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the league plans to host various events leading up to the official day in 2025. These events will highlight the organization’s achievements and promote ongoing voter education and engagement in Wheaton. The League of Women Voters of Wheaton continues to encourage dialogue around important issues and strives to foster an informed electorate.
The organization’s impact is evident in its ability to adapt to changing political landscapes while maintaining its core mission. By focusing on community involvement and education, the league has established itself as a cornerstone of civic activity in Wheaton, inspiring future generations to participate in democracy.
The upcoming anniversary serves not only as a celebration of past accomplishments but also as a call to action for residents to engage with their local government and participate actively in the electoral process. The League of Women Voters of Wheaton looks forward to continuing its work and furthering its mission in the years to come.
