The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is set to launch an exhibition titled Fifty Shades of Ink, showcasing a collection of rarely seen ink paintings and historical tools. Opening on December 6, 2023, this exhibition aims to highlight the expressive potential of ink, a concept first articulated by the Tang-dynasty scholar Zhang Yanyuan over 1,200 years ago. His observations about ink’s versatility continue to resonate within contemporary artistic practices.

In an email interview, curator of Asian art, Dr. Heng Wu, expressed her excitement about the exhibition. “I started exploring our collections and discovered how strong our ink painting collection actually is,” she noted. Many of the works featured have been in storage for years, and this exhibition offers an important opportunity to display their breadth.

Zhang Yanyuan, recognized as one of the earliest art historians, wrote a pivotal text in the ninth century that documented various artists, their techniques, and aesthetics. His assertion that “ink has five shades” became fundamental to the art of ink painting, suggesting that this medium holds a wide range of expressive possibilities. Dr. Wu creatively connects this ancient insight to modern culture through the exhibition’s title, Fifty Shades of Ink, signaling its relevance to contemporary audiences.

The influence of traditional ink theory can be seen in various modern art forms, including graphic novels and animation. Dr. Wu confirmed this connection, stating, “We can see the traces of ink concepts in graphic novels, animation, and digital brush engines.” Elements such as bold outlines and the strategic use of negative space, she explained, are rooted in the principles developed in traditional ink painting.

Panel Discussion and Free Admission

To celebrate the opening of Fifty Shades of Ink, the gallery will host a special Mandarin-language panel discussion from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event, moderated by Dr. Wu, will feature local artists Xuan Yongsheng, Li Zhenjun, and Su Jiangang. Each artist’s work reflects a continuing engagement with the historical ideas underlying ink painting. The discussion will be recorded and later made available with English subtitles.

Gallery admission will be free on opening day, part of the Feel Free – Free Gallery Days initiative supported by TD Bank Group. Visitors can attend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving them a chance to explore the exhibition and participate in the panel discussion.

Dr. Wu hopes that attendees will take note of the intricate details in the ink paintings. “I hope people notice the way a line unfolds or folds, the strokes repeat or vary, the way water settles into ink, or ink settles into paper,” she stated. “When you start noticing these details, the whole painting opens up in a very rewarding way.”

This exhibition promises to bridge the gap between ancient and contemporary artistic expressions, inviting all to appreciate the enduring legacy and versatility of ink.
