At the Sault Steelers’ Awards Night celebration, held on December 23, 1975, three local athletes were recognized for their contributions to the community: Don Mei, Brad Jordin, and Vern Milosevich. This event highlighted not only their achievements on the field but also their impact off the field, showcasing the importance of community involvement in sports.

Community Impact Through Christmas Cheer

The festive spirit was palpable as the event coincided with ongoing charitable efforts in the area. Christmas Cheer, a local initiative, successfully provided hampers to approximately 750 families, which included turkeys or chickens and toys for children. Joyce Curry, the convener of Christmas Cheer, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Please thank the city for me,” emphasizing the community’s role in supporting those in need.

Through donations to The Sault Star’s Christmas fund, which reached a total of $11,685.40, the organization was able to make a significant impact on families facing hardships during the holiday season. This fundraising effort reflects the generosity of local donors, including individuals who contributed to bring joy to the less fortunate.

Local Events and Historical Context

In addition to the recognition of the athletes and the charitable efforts, the awards night took place against a backdrop of various community events from previous decades. On the same date in 1950, the Santa Claus Fund provided Christmas cheer to around 200 individuals, primarily children, from 57 families. The fund, which concluded its collection efforts with a total of $820.39, was supported by numerous local donors.

Earlier, in 1925, the David Kyle School hosted its annual Christmas concert, featuring performances from students such as Evelyn Malloy and Alfred Rose. Events like these demonstrate the long-standing tradition of community engagement during the holiday season.

As the evening progressed, the recognition of Mei, Jordin, and Milosevich served as a reminder of the positive influence that sports figures can have, both in athletics and in community service. Their contributions, along with the efforts of local organizations, continue to foster a spirit of giving and support during the holidays.

With a rich history of community involvement, the Sault Steelers and their supporters exemplify the values of teamwork and compassion, extending beyond the field and into the hearts of those they serve.
