The Sault Steelers celebrated outstanding contributions to the community during their Awards Night in 1975, recognizing the efforts of individuals who have significantly impacted local initiatives. Among the honorees were Don Mei, Brad Jordin, and Vern Milosevich, who were acknowledged for their commitment to community service.

In a festive spirit, students from St. Bernadette School ensured that Santa Claus was well-fed during a breakfast visit with the junior and senior kindergarten classes. This event, held on December 23, 2000, added to the holiday cheer as children engaged with the festive figure, embodying the joy of the season.

The Christmas Cheer initiative, which also took place around this time, provided hampers to approximately 750 families, ensuring that each box included a turkey or chicken and toys for young recipients. The donations to The Sault Star’s Christmas fund reached an impressive total of $11,685.40, with Joyce Curry, the Christmas Cheer convener, expressing gratitude to the community: “Please thank the city for me.”

The event also highlighted upcoming local performances, including a production of Dracula by the Sault Theatre Workshop. Cast members such as Keith Knight, Tony Chapman, Tom Hendrie, and Cheryl Montgomery were preparing to bring this classic tale to life, further enriching the community’s cultural offerings.

Reflecting on past contributions, the Sault Star Santa Claus Fund from December 23, 1950, provided joy to around 200 individuals, primarily children, from 57 families. The fund, which closed at noon that day, amassed $820.39 in donations from local supporters, illustrating a longstanding tradition of community generosity.

The annual Christmas concert at David Kyle School in 1925 showcased the talents of local students, including performances from Evelyn Malloy, Myrtle Bovington, and others, celebrating the artistic spirit of the season.

Furthermore, in 1915, a Great Patriotic Rally was set to take place at Columbia Hall, featuring speeches from Sgt. Maj. Eccles and Staff Sgt. Gandy, alongside music and song, indicating the community’s resilient spirit during challenging times.

As the community reflects on its rich history of generosity and celebration, events like the Sault Steelers’ Awards Night continue to play a crucial role in recognizing and encouraging local contributions.
