Santa Claus brought festive joy to young patients at the Alberta Children’s Hospital on December 4, 2023, thanks to a special visit organized by STARS ambulance services. At 1 p.m., a bright red helicopter descended onto the snowy landing pad outside the hospital, capturing the attention of both children and staff who eagerly gathered at the windows to witness the magical arrival.

As the helicopter touched down, Santa emerged, clad in his signature velvet red suit, beaming with warmth and cheer. The visit marked the second consecutive year that STARS has facilitated this heartwarming event, designed to uplift the spirits of children undergoing treatment. “It was like landing on a featherbed,” Santa remarked, expressing his delight at the ride. He noted the comfort of the helicopter compared to his traditional sleigh, humorously mentioning the challenges of flying over Calgary.

Santa’s arrival was met with excitement as he waved to the patients and staff, while a helicopter pilot handed him a large red sack filled with gifts. “You can see all the kids around inside looking out, and all the smiles on their faces,” said Jo Ann Beckie, chief operating officer at the hospital. She described the day as a “joy” that is profoundly felt throughout the hospital.

During his visit, Santa engaged with the children, responding to their curious inquiries. “They’re very sensible questions,” he noted, recalling how many kids asked him about his ability to travel the world in one night. He cleverly kept the details of his journey a secret, declaring that such knowledge was for the children alone.

The initiative is a collaboration between STARS, the hospital, and TC Energy. Mike LaMacchia, chief operating officer for provincial operations at STARS, explained how the organization became involved in this festive tradition. STARS “came to the rescue” when Santa’s sleigh broke down, allowing for the continuation of this beloved event.

Beckie expressed hope that this cherished tradition would continue in the future, stating, “It’s just a day of joy, so it’s something we look forward to every year.” The visit not only brings smiles to the children but also fosters a sense of community among the hospital staff and volunteers, all of whom are inspired by the spirit of the season.

As Santa prepared to depart, the children waved goodbye, their faces illuminated by the joy of the moment. Such visits remind us of the power of kindness and the impact of small gestures during the holiday season.
