Notre-Dame-du-Sault and G.G.S. Claim Victory at Algoma Robotics

The Algoma District School Board’s elementary robotics competition concluded with a remarkable success for the teams from Notre-Dame-du-Sault and St. Joseph Island Central Public School, who collectively emerged as champions this past Saturday. The event took place at Boreal French Immersion Public School and saw participation from thirty-nine teams, a significant increase from the twenty-four teams that competed in 2025.

Approximately 150 students from fourteen schools across the region, stretching from Goulais River to Blind River, showcased their skills in robotics. Notably, Ben R. McMullin Public School and St. Joseph Island Central Public School were making their debut at this competition, adding fresh talent to the mix.

Award Winners and Achievements

In addition to the overall victory, several awards were presented to recognize exceptional performances. The Excellence Award in the elementary division went to M&M from Notre-Dame-du-Sault, while Korah Intermediate’s Hot Bots secured the equivalent award for the middle school division. Other notable recipients included the Robo Toasters, who won the Design Award, and Revy from Notre-Dame-du-Sault, who claimed the Amaze Award. The Build Award was given to the Dancing Monkeys from Blind River Public School, and the Create Award was awarded to Fruit Loop from Boreal French Immersion. The Judges’ Award went to CAES-A from Central Algoma Elementary School, while the Skills Champion title was claimed by the Mustang Seniors from Mountain View Public School.

The tournament champions, who will advance to the next level of competition in Brampton on February 21, 2024, are The Unknowns from Notre-Dame-du-Sault and G.G.S. from St. Joseph Island Central Public School. Alongside them, Hot Bots, Greeny from Boreal French Immersion Public School, Dancing Monkeys, The Unknowns, and M&M will continue to compete at a higher level.

Provincial Qualifier Insights

In addition to the elementary competition, teams from Korah Collegiate and Vocational School, St. Mary’s College, Central Algoma Secondary School, and W.C. Eaket participated in a VEX Robotics Provincial Qualifier held at Cambrian College in Sudbury. Korah’s Double Double advanced to the finals during the playoff rounds, further showcasing the talent present in the region.

Of the eight teams representing Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma, six finished in the Top 10 among twenty-three participating teams. The Wicked Weirdos from Korah received the Judges’ Award, while Double Double captured the Innovate Award, highlighting the competitive spirit and innovation among the participants.
