A women’s shelter in Montreal, Chez Doris, has announced the addition of new emergency resources aimed at supporting vulnerable women during the cold winter months. The shelter, which currently operates with 24 beds in its downtown permanent facility, will increase its capacity by providing an additional six spots specifically for the winter season.

In response to the harsh weather conditions, Chez Doris has also established a day warming centre. This facility will feature 10 additional beds along with approximately 20 seated spaces where women can find warmth, rest, enjoy a snack, and sip hot beverages. The executive director of Chez Doris, Diane Pilote, emphasized the urgency of providing shelter during this critical time, stating, “During this winter period, in the cold, we want to make sure they’re inside at night because it’s a question of survival.”

The risks associated with homelessness during winter are significant. Pilote pointed out that women sleeping outside are vulnerable to frostbite, hypothermia, and other cold-related health complications. Many women facing homelessness or fleeing domestic violence prefer shelters that cater exclusively to women rather than mixed-gender facilities. Unfortunately, the night shelter at Chez Doris is full year-round, highlighting the pressing need for additional resources.

With the aim of raising awareness about these new winter resources, Pilote hopes that community members will share information among friends and families. “If they know that we are there… we take care of them,” she added, emphasizing the shelter’s commitment to supporting women in need.

The day shelter operates daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with adjusted hours on Wednesdays, when it opens from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then again from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The night shelter is available from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Furthermore, Chez Doris offers health and social services at a centre open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The expansion of resources at Chez Doris reflects a broader commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations during the winter months. With the added support, the shelter aims to ensure that women in Montreal have a safe place to stay, particularly during the coldest periods of the year.
