A new McDonald’s has officially opened on Rideau Street, marking its return by honoring a notorious raccoon that once captured the community’s attention. In a charitable gesture, the restaurant has made a donation to Holly’s Haven Wildlife Rescue, a local organization dedicated to rehabilitating wild animals.

The previous McDonald’s location became infamous two years ago when a video of a late-night brawl went viral. The footage featured a man unexpectedly pulling a baby raccoon from his hoodie, which quickly turned the animal into an internet sensation. This quirky moment is part of the restaurant’s legacy, and the new management aims to celebrate it while supporting wildlife care.

Holly’s Haven Wildlife Rescue, founded by Lynne Rowe, has been actively expanding its operations to cater to the increasing number of animals in need. This year alone, the sanctuary welcomed over 270 wild animals, with raccoons being the most frequent guests. Currently, the facility is home to 133 raccoons, including injured and orphaned individuals.

According to Jamie Hindley, a director at the sanctuary, the need for such facilities is growing, particularly as urban development displaces wildlife. “We pick up injured wildlife, anywhere from raccoons to coyotes and foxes,” she explained. The sanctuary also assists animals seeking shelter from harsh winter conditions.

The donation from the new McDonald’s will contribute to the establishment of a new isolation unit at Holly’s Haven. This unit is vital for assessing the health of incoming animals and preventing the spread of disease. The funds will also help create additional enclosures, allowing the sanctuary to accommodate a wider range of animals without turning any away. Hindley expressed gratitude, stating, “The donation puts us one step closer to opening our isolation unit and helping more animals.”

Local officials have praised the restaurant’s commitment to community engagement. Rideau Vanier Councillor Stéphanie Plante expressed her delight at the opening festivities, emphasizing the positive impact of the donation. “We truly live in the BEST city,” she remarked, excited by the combination of fast food and wildlife support.

The new McDonald’s location will provide take-out, delivery, and a walk-up window, although there will be no dine-in options available. Franchise owner Dan Maclean highlighted the significance of honoring the viral raccoon through this initiative. “Many local residents remember the raccoon, and we still hear people talk about it,” he noted. “So, we thought, why not use this ongoing conversation to do some good around it?”

In addition to the initial donation, the McDonald’s will hold a fundraiser for Holly’s Haven in January, pledging to donate a percentage of profits and offer volunteer hours to support the rescue. “I can’t express how excited we are to be back at the Byward Market and serve our community again,” Maclean added.

The location opened its doors on Thursday and features a decal in one of its windows, paying homage to the famous raccoon that once made headlines. As the new establishment begins its journey, it carries with it a legacy of community spirit and wildlife care.
