King Charles III made a notable public appearance on December 7, 2023, during the opening of the new Guinness Open Gate Brewery in London’s Covent Garden. This visit marked his first public engagement since announcing positive progress in his cancer treatment. The brewery represents a substantial investment of £73 million (approximately C$134 million), featuring a microbrewery, a visitor experience, restaurants, shops, and event spaces, all situated in a historic brewing district.

At the opening event, the King was in high spirits, engaging with attendees and sharing light-hearted moments. He made a playful comment to carolers, suggesting they must be “moonlighting from the Royal Opera House.” His interactions included teasing reporters about not being able to sample the beverages present.

During the festivities, Charles participated in a demonstration on how to pour a pint of Guinness. He learned to tilt the glass at a 45-degree angle and allow the drink to settle for 60 to 70 seconds to achieve the ideal pour. His instructor, Leo Ravina, praised the King’s effort, declaring he had poured a “perfect pint.” Charles responded with humor, brushing off the compliment while wiping away a foam moustache.

The King also sampled a variety of beers, expressing particular enjoyment for the less-common selections, including the Old Brewer’s Yard Porter, Winter Warmer, and an Apricot Sour, which he identified as his favorite. In addition to the tasting, he toured the brewery’s inner workings and met with the team responsible for crafting unique brews at the Covent Garden location.

Community Engagement and Cultural Significance

The opening event highlighted the brewery’s importance within the local community. Charles ventured into a Christmas-themed food market where community groups were present, contributing to the festive atmosphere. The courtyard of the market featured a striking 30-foot mural by artist Mason London, depicting Covent Garden’s historical brewing narrative through its inhabitants over the centuries.

Among the attendees was filmmaker Gurinder Chadha, known for her acclaimed work on the film “Bend It Like Beckham.” She is currently working on a modern adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” titled “Christmas Karma.”

Nik Jhangiani, a representative of Diageo, the parent company of Guinness, emphasized the significance of the brewery’s opening. In a statement, he said, “We’re honoured to have His Majesty The King officially open our Guinness Open Gate Brewery London today. Pubs and restaurants are the heartbeat of the hospitality sector and this is a wonderful show of support for the industry at this time.”

This facility is the fourth Guinness Open Gate Brewery globally, joining locations in Dublin, Baltimore, and Chicago. The establishment not only showcases the brewing tradition but also reinforces the cultural ties between the monarchy and the hospitality industry in the United Kingdom.
