Grundy County Reflects on Holiday Generosity and Future Needs
The holiday season often brings a mix of emotions, and in Grundy County, that experience is evident as the community reflects on its recent charitable efforts. With the conclusion of major nonprofit initiatives and year-end donations, many are left with feelings of both relief and contemplation about what remains to be done.
As the year draws to a close, organizations that provide direct assistance have either completed their seasonal programs or are nearing completion. Many donors have contributed, but some still wait for the December 31 deadline to finalize their charitable giving. Company parties and dinners have largely wrapped up, prompting residents to focus on preparations for family gatherings and gift exchanges.
In a message to the community, Julianne Buck, Executive Director of the Community Foundation of Grundy County, highlighted the spirit of generosity that characterizes the area. She expressed gratitude for the community’s support of local nonprofits that deliver meals, groceries, gifts, and emotional support during this time. Buck emphasized that community contributions, whether through financial donations or volunteered time, have significantly eased the burdens of the county’s most vulnerable residents.
Grundy County’s commitment to supporting its own extends beyond the holiday season. An example of this community spirit was recently demonstrated following a house fire in Morris. Thanks to social media, family and friends quickly communicated the needs of those affected, prompting an outpouring of support in the form of clothing, cash, and food donations. Buck acknowledged the community’s swift response, thanking everyone who stepped up during such critical times.
Looking ahead, the need for assistance will continue beyond the holidays. On December 16, 2025, the Grundy County Interagency Council (GCIC) hosted a legislative breakfast. This event allowed local agencies and nonprofits to present a one-page summary of their clients’ needs and the challenges they expect to face in 2026. These summaries will serve as a foundational tool for deeper discussions aimed at finding effective solutions to persistent community issues, including domestic violence, mental health, and support for families with young children.
While various organizations are actively addressing these concerns, Buck noted that there is always more work to be done. She encouraged residents to remain engaged and prepared to contribute in the new year. “Grundy County excels at taking care of our own,” Buck stated, urging individuals to consider how they can help, whether through monetary donations, volunteering time, or sharing their skills.
For those interested in volunteering, Buck recommended visiting volunteergrundy.com, where residents can view current needs identified by area nonprofits. People who wish to make financial contributions but are unsure where to direct their support can contact the Community Foundation of Grundy County at 815-941-0852 or via email at [email protected]. The foundation can assist in matching donors with charities that align with their interests.
It is important to recognize that not everyone experiences joy during the holidays. Some individuals may struggle with emotional challenges, often referred to as the “Blue Christmas.” For anyone needing someone to talk to, Buck reminded the community about the 988 mental health hotline, which is available 24/7 for those facing emotional struggles. Veterans can also access a dedicated hotline by pressing 1 after dialing.
As the community prepares to welcome 2026, Buck expressed hope for continued engagement and support. She invites everyone to join in celebrating the spirit of generosity that defines Grundy County as they move forward together.
