Gord Johns Honored with Jim Carr Forest Community Champion Award
Courtenay-Alberni Member of Parliament Gord Johns has been awarded the 2025 Jim Carr Forest Community Champion Award. This recognition highlights his commitment to Canada’s forest sector and the communities that depend on it. The award is presented by the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and is named in memory of the late Jim Carr, who served as Minister of Natural Resources and was a staunch advocate for the Canadian forestry industry.
Acknowledging Dedication to Sustainable Forestry
The Jim Carr Forest Community Champion Award celebrates leaders who promote the environmental, social, and economic benefits of sustainable forest management in Canada. In a statement following the announcement, Johns expressed that he is “deeply honoured” to receive such a prestigious recognition. He emphasized the importance of forestry as a cornerstone of both local communities and the broader economy.
“Forestry has always been at the heart of our communities and our economy,” he stated. “I believe its future lies in sustainable practices, innovation, clean energy, and respect for the land and waters that sustain us.”
Johns has been a Member of Parliament since 2015 and has consistently advocated for the forest sector. His focus includes promoting sustainable forestry practices, biomass innovation, and the development of value-added wood products. He has worked closely with local industry stakeholders to understand the challenges they face and to explore opportunities for growth.
Past Award Recipients and Industry Impact
Previous recipients of the award include notable figures such as current Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, Chief Paul Gladu, and former MPs like Lisa Raitt, Ed Fast, and Candice Bergen. The recognition has also been awarded to various mayors and community leaders across Canada who have demonstrated a commitment to the forestry sector.
Derek Nighbor, president and CEO of FPAC, commended Johns for his dedication to the industry. “Gord works closely with local industry and employees to create opportunity, understand our sector’s greatest challenges and opportunities, and has proven that he is prepared to stand with the sector and its people – just like Jim did,” he said.
Johns’ efforts and the recognition he has received highlight the ongoing importance of the forestry sector in Canada. As discussions around sustainability and innovation continue to evolve, leaders like Gord Johns play a crucial role in shaping the future of this vital industry.
