A cherished holiday tradition continues at the Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site, where visitors gathered for the annual Holiday House Tea on December 8, 2023. This festive event, hosted in the historic site’s inviting kitchen, has delighted attendees for over three decades, mixing history with seasonal cheer.

According to Ian Ganton, the site’s heritage programmer, the tea tradition dates back to the 1860s when Margaret Pim and her husband operated the Stone House Hotel. “She did Victorian teas,” Ganton explained, emphasizing the historical roots of the event. Guests enjoyed a menu that featured a variety of sophisticated sandwiches, such as those wrapped in wonton wrappers with fillings like devilled eggs, alongside rolled spiral sandwiches filled with either cherry or sweet pickle, chicken salad, and egg salad.

The culinary experience included a selection of desserts, which were prepared by experienced chef Alma Kasch and her team. Attendees savored the renowned sticky toffee pudding, shortbreads, sugar cookies, and gingerbread men. Beverages offered included traditional tea, fruit punch, and both regular and decaffeinated coffee. “It’s all very pleasant,” Ganton noted, reflecting on the warm atmosphere created by the historic setting and the seasonal spirit.

The turnout for this year’s tea was impressive, with 32 participants filling the kitchen to capacity. Two additional teas were scheduled for December 12 and December 13, both of which have sold out. Due to the continued demand, a new tea has been arranged for 12:30 p.m. on December 19, 2023. Tickets for this event can be purchased directly at the Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site or by contacting the site at 705-759-5443.

Ganton expressed his enjoyment of the event, stating, “We do teas throughout the year with different themes, but Christmas is a special time.” The combination of history, community, and festive spirit creates a unique holiday experience at the Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site, ensuring that this beloved tradition remains a highlight of the season.
