The DALI Alliance has launched new test and certification specifications aimed at enhancing the integration of wireless and wired lighting systems. Announced on December 22, 2025, this initiative will facilitate control of wired DALI devices through Bluetooth® NLC (Networked Lighting Control) or Zigbee wireless ecosystems. The specifications promise to improve interoperability and flexibility within the lighting industry, allowing a seamless connection between these technologies.

This new framework enables wired DALI products, including both DALI-2 and D4i, to operate within wireless ecosystems. It offers a significant advancement, allowing users to select the most effective lighting control solutions for various applications. The standardized gateways will ensure accurate translation between DALI systems and the wireless protocols, thereby linking diverse technologies and fostering market confidence.

Enhanced Interoperability and Flexibility

According to Paul Drosihn, General Manager of the DALI Alliance, “The introduction of these test and certification specifications for Wireless to DALI Gateways is a significant milestone.” He emphasizes that this development opens new possibilities for integrating DALI with wireless systems, which benefits developers and professionals involved in building automation. Drosihn added that by standardizing these gateways, the alliance promotes interoperability across the lighting industry.

The completion of the Bluetooth® NLC to DALI Gateway Specification suite has been recognized as a pivotal achievement for lighting control systems. Neville Meijers, CEO of the Bluetooth SIG, noted that these standardized gateways enable seamless integration between DALI’s reliable wired systems and leading wireless lighting standards. This collaboration underscores the value of open, industry-defined standards in fostering innovation and enhancing the potential of intelligent lighting systems.

The integration of Zigbee technology with DALI is also highlighted by Tobin Richardson, President and CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance. He stated, “Zigbee’s robust, interoperable wireless mesh technology, combined with the precision and scalability of DALI’s digital lighting control, bridges the gap between field-level lighting devices and wireless IoT networks.” This integration is expected to enhance flexibility, reduce deployment complexity, and lead to the development of more intelligent, energy-efficient buildings.

Commitment to Open Standards

The DALI Alliance’s ongoing commitment to open, industry-defined specifications is crucial for ensuring the proper functionality of these gateways. Unlike proprietary solutions, standardized gateways help mitigate compatibility issues and guarantee a consistent user experience across various systems.
