CBC Saskatchewan Celebrates 2026’s Future 40 Changemakers
CBC Saskatchewan has unveiled its Future 40 for 2026, spotlighting ten exceptional individuals under the age of 40 who are effecting positive change across the province. This initiative, which occurs every 18 months, recognizes the dedication and contributions of young leaders who are enhancing their communities.
These ten honorees were selected from a pool of numerous nominees, each demonstrating a profound commitment to making Saskatchewan a better place to live, work, and thrive. Here are their inspiring stories.
Empowering Youth and Communities
Vishall Agasthian, a 19-year-old founder of the non-profit InspirED Sask, is passionate about educating young people on crucial topics such as voting and mental health. Under his leadership, the organization has initiated various community service projects, including a successful food bank donation campaign dubbed “Pizza With a Purpose.” Agasthian credits his nomination as a reflection of the hard work and support from his team and family.
In the realm of advocacy, Lanelle Big Eagle, operations manager for OUTSaskatoon, has made significant strides in promoting inclusivity for the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Her colleague, Melody Wood, emphasized Big Eagle’s vital role in the organization’s resurgence after financial challenges. Big Eagle’s commitment stems from her experiences growing up in White Bear First Nations, where she struggled to find acceptance.
Kiké Dueck, a twelve-year-old climate activist from Regina, exemplifies that age does not limit one’s ability to impact. Over the past 18 months, Dueck has actively petitioned the Saskatchewan legislature for climate action and organized rallies advocating for environmental justice. Her passionate connection to nature drives her motivation to inspire others to join the fight against climate change.
Cultural Advocacy and Artistic Expression
Among the honorees, Amarachi Ejike co-founded the non-profit Afro Tribes to help immigrants connect with their heritage. Through various initiatives, including a summer music festival and cultural camps, Ejike fosters a sense of belonging for individuals of African descent in Regina. “Saskatchewan is home,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of cultural connection.
Miguel Fenrich, an author and journalist, uses storytelling to address issues of justice and identity. After witnessing pivotal events like the murder of George Floyd, Fenrich turned to writing as a means of advocacy. He strives to change perspectives through his published works, which examine life through a decolonial and anti-racist lens.
Maryam Masoomi, a former member of an all-female music group in Afghanistan, now resides in Saskatoon after fleeing her home country. She has worked to empower Afghan women by helping them adjust to life in Canada while encouraging them to express their experiences through music. Her story of resilience resonates deeply within the community.
The impact of advocacy work is further exemplified by Heather O’Watch, who champions Indigenous rights and youth empowerment. Through her initiative, Timpsina Society, she educates Indigenous youth on policy-making and encourages community engagement. O’Watch emphasizes the importance of understanding one’s roots while striving for broader change.
Creative Solutions and Healing
Mike Sheinin, a tech professional and rugby coach, is also a celebrated whistler, competing internationally in this unique art form. His diverse interests showcase a commitment to personal expression and community involvement.
In the creative realm, Zoe Slusar, known as ZHE the Free, uses art as a means of healing. As a multidisciplinary artist and youth mentor, she supports vulnerable young people in Saskatoon, helping them find strength and self-expression through hip-hop and other artistic avenues.
Lastly, Linzi Stoddard, founder of The You Are More Project, advocates for survivors of sexual violence through body-based healing practices. Her organization focuses on community events that promote recovery and empowerment, highlighting the importance of addressing sensitive issues within society.
As CBC Saskatchewan honors these ten remarkable individuals, their stories serve as powerful reminders of the impact one can have on their community. The Future 40 initiative not only celebrates the achievements of these young leaders but also inspires others to aspire for positive change in their own lives and communities.
