Non-profit organizations in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, are facing a significant shortage of winter clothing donations as demand rises. The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Sydney has reported a decline in available winter gear, leaving many community members without essential items during the colder months. Major Pauline Randell expressed concern, stating, “The demand is great, and this year we don’t have enough of the supply to supply the people that need it.”

Community Needs Increase

The Randells, who have recently moved to Cape Breton, are managing Salvation Army operations in both Sydney and North Sydney. This is their first Christmas season in the region, and they are witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by those seeking assistance. Major Randell noted, “It’s sad, yes, it’s sad. We truly do need some donations for these people who are out in the cold.”

While the situation is dire, other local organizations are also feeling the strain. Alana MacLellan from the Souls Harbour drop-in centre in Sydney Mines highlighted an increase in community needs this year, particularly related to housing insecurity. She noted that, while everyone who visited seeking a winter coat was able to find one on a recent Monday, the centre’s usual high levels of donations are not sufficient to meet the growing demand. “Probably once a month, I would send a list to our social media department to say, ‘There are these couple of items that we need or we’re running low on,’” MacLellan explained.

Urgent Call for Donations

Trevor DenHartogh, who oversees the Undercurrent Youth Centre in Glace Bay, reported a dramatic increase in requests for assistance this winter. He indicated that men’s clothing remains their biggest need, but they are struggling to keep enough winter coats, hats, and gloves in stock for all ages. “We can’t seem to keep enough on our shelves,” he said.

Major Randell emphasized that coats are the most critical item needed at the Salvation Army. “That’s our aim, that’s our goal,” she said. “To help those who are out in the cold to feel a little bit warmer.” The thrift store in North Sydney is also in urgent need of clothing donations.

As winter officially begins, all three organizations welcome clothing donations throughout the season, extending their appeal for support until spring. Community members are encouraged to contribute whatever they can to help those in need during this challenging time.
